Product Description:

Picture Switcher is a background application that will put a menu on the right side of your menu bar to switch desktop pictures. It has most of the options of the Desktop preference Pane, and does not need the Finder to be running to work.

What's new in this version:

  • Added in a picture viewer window. This will display thumbnails of your pictures and let you choose the desktop picture from there. Accessed from the new item "View Pictures..."
  • Changed the way Picture Switcher keeps itself current with the folders on the hard drive. It now watches from the background for any changes. This means there's no longer a pause when you select the menu.
  • Fixed an issue where Picture Switcher would refuse to start up if you added a new monitor / created a new user and tried to launch it before opening the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane.
  • Added a checkmark next to the folder(s) down to the currently selected desktop picture, to easily see which picture is selected. Note that this only works if the picture is in a folder that's been added to Picture Switcher.
  • Added an option to list your iPhoto Library. This option is located in the window where you add folders to the list. It's on by default.
  • If you have multiple displays, the Display menu now lists their names, rather than the generic Display 0, Display 1, etc.
  • If you have the default /Library/Desktop Pictures in your folder list, it's now displayed as "Apple Images." This is the same name that is used for this folder in the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane.
  • If something changes the desktop picture or its options outside of Picture Switcher (like the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane), Picture Switcher will now notice and update itself.
  • Moved the "About" and "Quit" items to a submenu named Picture Switcher.
  • Added in a Help folder, accessed via the new Picture Switcher menu.

I've been using ChangeDesktop (a freeware desktop utility) for many years now. What makes this app worth 30 friggin' bucks?

Picture Switcher ReviewTotally Awesome Convenience! - Version: 1.1.2, 8/14/2007 12:57PM PST

SGoodheart
This little app rocks! I love how I can set up folder sets and instantly switch between them via the menu -- way faster than control-clicking the desktop, which only invokes the System Preferences Desktop and Screensaver module.

I love the View Pictures review mode, when I want to quickly set a favorite image from a folder set, and I love how I can instantly change how and where the image is placed, and how often the picture changes, from every five seconds to however long you wish to customize.

Picture Switcher is a little jewel, and well worth a little menu bar space.
