Product Description:

Expanding the possibilities of Apple's Spotlight, FoxTrot Personal Search is a powerful find-by-content tool that delivers dynamic categorization, context-sensitive display of found items, flexible relevance-ranking and five different approaches to searches (exact words, wildcards, literal, single term and complex patterns). It supports over 300 file types, including PDF, Word, HTML, text, OmniOutliner and much more.

What's new in this version:

  • Includes german-language localization
  • Fixes the occasional remaining "Can't connect to indexer" messages that remained in 2.5.2
  • When updating an index, if a folder (or more typically, a volume - shared folder, external drive, or disk image) specified in the "indexed data" pane is not found (typically, because the volume is not mounted), its previous content is no longer considered as having been deleted.
  • In some rare circumstances, an index could fail to be shared (registration problem)
  • Fixed a bug that could cause the index settings to be lost when the disk is full- A crash could sometime occur in RosettaMDIHelper, when using a PowerPC Spotlight metadata importer on an Intel Mac.
  • What was new in 2.5:
  • Implemented performance optimizations since version 2.0.4
  • Added Snow Leopard compatibility, notably when previewing a file using Quick Look
  • Implemented a new Date range categorizer which enable visual and numerical definition of a date interval for a document, along with a histogram showing frequency of hits in a given period
  • Some Spotlight metadata importers bundled with Snow Leopard were not supported, for example for HTML files
  • 2.5.1 - fixed a literal search string bug introduced in 2.5
  • Updated to build with Snow Leopard-compatible development tools
  • The "couldn't strip" warning on Leopard has been fixed
  • The ibtool error when using the Styled Text Field on Leopard has been fixed
  • Corrected an OmniOutliner importer compatibility issue
  • We no longer display January 1, 1904 as the creation dates for text preview or short pane of un-locateable documents
  • Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

    • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
    • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
    • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
    • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

FoxTrot Personal Search ReviewSaved the day... - Version: 2.5.3, 1/23/2010 07:55AM PST

This app is awesome. I was on deadline to submit a grant proposal and couldn't for the life of me find a document containing pertinent information. Fortunately for me, I had a trial version of FoxTrot Personal Search (FPS) still active, so I fired it up. Upon first starting the app you are given a choice which folder on your hard drive you want to index. The index building process takes several minutes depending on the number of records it has to process. The index created makes for very fast searches using key word(s). The FPS uses normal boolean logic and wildcards. Well, when I typed in the search box the phrase "united way" that I so desperately needed to find, bam, a list of records (rtf, doc, pdf, etc.) popped up with all occurrences found in the folder selected to index. A separate viewer below this list shows a preview of the record with the phrase "united way" in bold and highlighted. There's also another window on the side that allows you to further drill down. For example, there's a section with a slider you use to narrow the date range to search. A second section shows the location(s) where the records were found (folders and subfolders on your hard drive) and the number of items found containing the key word(s) or phrase. You can also see in a third section the file type found (e.g., pdf, word processor, plain text, mail message, etc.) with the total number found. Within a few seconds I found the phrase I was looking for in a mail message from a colleague. That made my day and allowed me to complete the proposal on time. I immediately and gladly bought a license. There's more power under the hood (in Preferences) where you can add additional folders to include in the index (like User/Library/Mail for email searches), but it's not a good idea to index the entire hard drive because that will increase the size of the index file and slow down searches. Moreover, you can exclude certain folders (like a Backup folder) which will reduce redundancy and speed up the search function. I'm thrilled and highly recommend FPS if you have thousands of documents and/or email messages you need to regularly search for arcane data that you couldn't possibly keep straight in your head.

There is a "Foxtrot Personal Search" and a "Foxtrot PROFESSIONAL Search," both with updates to Version 2.0.2. THEY ARE NOT ONE AND THE SAME! The download from the VersionTracker Pro Desktop indicates an update to Version 2.0.2 of "Foxtrot PROFESSIONAL Search" but downloads Version 2.0.2 of "Foxtrot Personal Search", which has its own update listing in the VTPro Desktop. As is, there are two update downloads for "Foxtrot Personal Search" but no update download for "Foxtrot PROFESSIONAL Search". VersionTracker, please correct the "Foxtrot PROFESSIONAL Search" Version 2.0.2 update download in VTPro Desktop!

NOTE: In the past when VTPro Desktop error feedback has been provided to VersionTracker administration, typically errors have received no rectification. Hopefully such pattern, itself, will be instantaneously emended, as well!
