Mac HelpMate ReviewA must-have tool for remote techs - Version: 2.5, 8/13/2008 08:01PM PST

scott.gardner
Mac HelpMate provides a lot functionality and valuable diagnostic information to help you effectively and efficiently support your clients remotely. It also provides an easy-to-use interface for your clients to securely share their screen with you for "hands on" tech support (on-demand or automatically). Key words: easy, secure.

The Auto HelpMate functionality and its accompanying portal manager are worth the price of subscription alone. You can even track a client's lost or stolen Mac, because the portal maintains a "last seen online" entry for each Auto HelpMate-enabled Mac.

Mac HelpMate ReviewGreat freeware, but even better for Apple Consultants - Version: 2.5, 8/13/2008 11:28AM PST

Mac Helpmate's free features are excellent, and, who can argue with free?

But, I use the paid subscription portion of the app almost every day to help me address issues with my clients.

Pays for itself in gas alone, let alone how clients love when they can get me to login to their computers in just a few clicks.

Nothing special if you ask me. There are other tools that do the same. The company also makes Windows software and they haven't been around THAT long. The controls are a bit clunky as well. I tried to like but ended up tossing it after 5 months. :-(

Mac HelpMate ReviewGreat Product now Even Better - Version: 2.5, 5/20/2008 12:20PM PST

I have used Mac HelpMate in both the freeware mode and the paid subscription. The freeware version is on every machine own as well as at my clients as it does numerous tasks very well.

The subscription features, that allow me to connect to client's machines remotely (plus more), are an added bonus for the consultant but have little to do with the already rich feature-set everyone gets for free.

I continue to recommend the product and v2.5 is the best release yet.

Mac HelpMate Developer NoteMac HelpMate is Free! Not $600 a Year. - Version: 2.1, 12/18/2007 10:38PM PST

Mac HelpMate is widely considered to be one of the finest Troubleshooting, Maintenance and Diagnostic tools for Mac OS X. It is distributed as freeware. Now there is a related *Service* that's an annual subscription, for which Mac HelpMate serves as the front-end. No one *has* to pay that annual $600 fee, but people *choose* to if the service is apropos to their consulting or support business. Many Mac support pros find it well worthwhile.

If you're not in a position to pay the fee for or understand the value of a Mac HelpMate subscription, just use the software *as is* and pay nothing.

I hope this clears the air a bit.

Mac HelpMate CommentaryMaybe Bob Levitus is smoking something, maybe not. - Version: 2.1, 11/25/2007 07:32AM PST

But his glowing testimony seems at odds with the other comments here.

Ignoring all that, I would never, never NEVER shell out $600 a year to use ANY software. That is pure bull***t. I've been using the Mac OS for over ten years. Would I, would you, would ANYONE pay Apple $6000 for the privilege?

Mac HelpMate CommentaryKERNEL PANIC and customer support - Version: 2.1, 4/14/2007 04:25PM PST

After running HelpMate ( just for cleaning...I didn't do any of the 'tweaks' or 'use at your own risk' scripts) and deleting it, it continued to launch a script EVERY minute. After contacting the developer, I reinstalled and followed his directions to stop the script launch. However, my kernel is now completely screwed. The kernel_task is hogging all my system resources, Apps keep crashing (Safari hadn't crashed in 2 years...now every 10 min.), everything is running SLOW, I drop frames on video...both Quicktime and VLC crash...

BUT THE BEST PART...the support offered by Dean, the developer.

Without a bit of troubleshooting or investigating, he magicly declared that my problems have nothing to do with HelpMate. Everything ran fine before running HelpMate ( I figured after 2 years I should do some sort of routine mantinence) and now after running HelpMate it looks like I'm going to have to reinstall Mac OS and start from scratch.

Here's a couple of quotes from my e-mail with customer support...

"I am not responsible. You agreed to the EULA...It's clearly a case of someone who knew *just* enough to be dangerous to themselves."

I had no idea customer support this terrible exsisted outside of monopoly markets like cell phone and cable providers.
