Doesn't having the iChat icon in your menu bar do the same thing?
In 10.3.9 the iChat daemon launches at startup/log-in, uses minimal CPU cycles while it's running, and the app itself is not launched until you use it.

This program's dangerous on laptops. Why can't it just run, do its thing, and then quit?
1 The app. would be even better if there was a setting that allowed one to choose what status to logon under. I prefer 'away' and it currently defaults to 'available'.
2 The links on both VersionTracker and MacUpdate sites to the dev. seem to be broken.
