iSquint ReviewTemporary Fix for Transcoded flv to mp4 Files! - Version: 1.5.1, 2/26/2008 03:43PM PST

The nice folks over at iSquint have a Temporary Fix to the videos that were transcoded last year before the newest QuickTime decided not to play them!

Just change the suffix from .mp4 to to .3gp and they play fine.

I have no idea of the ramifications of this, but at least these vids will play in QuickTime again!

All of the .flv videos I used iSquint to convert to mp4 (before Quicktime started playing .flv files)... ALL of them do not play the video any more... really a drag.

iSquint CommentaryMust have utility for video freaks (2 suggestions though) - Version: 1.5, 12/28/2007 03:12PM PST

iSquint is one of the best freeware programs ever created for the Mac

It not only converts a wide array of videos to mp4, it also somehow manages
to fix most of the corrupted avi or mpegs I come across.

While it's primarily designed to convert vidz for ipods,
I mainly use iSquint to convert vidz to mp4 with H.264.
If the highest quality setting is used, it upgrades
the quality significantly.

Two suggestions to the developer:

I hate not being able to save my settings when quitting the program,
and having to change them every time I open it. Maybe you could
tweak it to save whatever settings were last used upon closing,
rather than defaulting to the ipod settings.

Also, why not include a donation link? I tried Visualhub but found it
didn't really offer anything I needed that wasn't already in iSquint.
I think a lot of satisfied users might contribute a few bucks voluntarily
as a "thank you."

iSquint Troubleshooting ReportHow do I get decent audio converting flv with H.264 Encoding? - Version: 1.5, 11/30/2007 11:32AM PST

When I convert flv files (e.g. from youtube) without H.264 encoding I get huge files (considering the video quality) with mediocre video and decent audio.

When I do so with H.264 encoding I get much, much better video in much, much smaller files but no matter what I do the audio has a bizarre, choppy, bubbly quality that sounds like it is being played back underwater. I've tried changing the Audio Channels to Stereo and Mono rather than Original with little to no improvement, as well as trying a few different Audio Hz settings which weren't any better either. Changing quality level doesn't change the outcome either.

Any suggestions? I'd really rather have the smaller, better looking files that the H.264 encoding gives me, but I need to be able to hear the audio track too.

Thanks.

iSquint ReviewGreat, fast quality conversions; small file size - Version: 1.5, 11/2/2007 02:39PM PST

Fantastic free product. There's a bit of nagging (to upgrade to VisualHub -- a more advanced shareware program), but that's a small irritation to put up with. Does a great job of converting a wide array of file types. For the smallest files and the best quality, choose H264 encoding; otherwise, the default settings are dandy. Runs much faster, and creates much smaller file sizes, than Quicktime Pro.

A must for anyone with a Mac and a video-capable iPod.
