Product Description:

BosworthToller is a computer version of the Bosworth-Toller Anglo-Saxon Dictionary. This Old English Dictionary is out of print, hard to find, and expensive. It's also bulky and hard to look up words in.

This program lets you search the dictionary by entering in substrings and typing in the weird anglo saxon characters by their modern equivalents, and so it's faster and easier to use than the physical version, or even the online version.

What's new in this version:

  • removed duplicates in word list.
  • made history buttons work correctly.
  • made search menu work correctly.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9
  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS 10.2 or higher

BosworthToller Anglo-Saxon Dictionary ReviewWow! - Version: 1.3, 10/25/2005 12:52PM PST

Wow! What I wouldn't have given to have had this when I was a student. (Actually, what wouldn't I have given to have a computer as a student). I well remember the two volume Bosworth and Toller -- a hard slog to lift off the shelves, even harder to use, but the only authoritative source for OId English.

Needless to say, I flicked backwards and forwards in my Klaeber Beowulf for the vocabulary, rather than using Bosworth and Toller.

But this! As an application it's fairly middle of the road. As a release of powerful information to those who want or need it, it's immense. You type in part of the word, it finds everything which fits. No worries about eth, thorn, yog and wyn. If you just type in 'th' it finds the eths and thorns without any worries.

Everything is very cleanly laid out -- another huge improvement over Bosworth and Toller's printed edition -- and the application runs very fast.

Of course, if you aren't translating Old English, this is completely useless -- but, if you aren't, why are you reading this review at all?
