Product Description:

AKVIS Enhancer is an image enhancement software for revealing details on a picture. Enhancer allows detecting details from underexposed, overexposed and mid tone areas of a photo without manipulating exposure.

The tool is useful in cases when a photo lacks detail. For example, when a picture has been taken with the background overexposed and consequently the foreground is hardly discernible, which is especially annoying when you take a picture of a person; or when a photo lacks dramatic effect due to vagueness of the scene.

If you try to reveal details in highlighted or overshadowed areas using exposure correction (for example, Levels) you run the risk of spoiling the parts of the image that you want to leave unchanged.

The idea behind Enhancer is entirely different. AKVIS Enhancer brings out details by intensifying color transition. It means that Enhancer strengthens the difference between adjacent pixels having different color gradations and therefore allows revealing not only details in the shadow but even details in the overexposed and mid tone areas.

Earlier it was possible (and such image enhancement programs exist) to achieve the same result by manipulating with 2-4 shots of the same scene. AKVIS Enhancer does it all out of one shot thanks to the advanced algorithm of photo correction.

AKVIS Enhancer is useful not only for correction of family and art photos, but can be effective as well in technical use. Publishers of technical literature can apply Enhancer to show equipment illustrations in detail; doctors can use Enhancer to increase the level of detail on roentgenograms, etc.

AKVIS Enhancer is a plug-in.

It works under image processing programs that support plugins. It is compatible with Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Corel Photo-Paint, etc.

What's new in this version:

supports Exif data (the data registered by the camera when shooting, e.g. the date, the settings, etc.) and ensures that these data won't get lost after the processing. The software offers three modes.

AKVIS Enhancer ReviewV 9.0 looks to have a great addition - Version: 9.0, 3/28/2008 12:23PM PST

on my intel-desktop macpro running PS CS3 and 10.4.11

The new Focus mode of Enhancer would appear to be a de-convolver which "sharpens" using a very different approach than standard sharpeners a'la photoshop, seems to be similar to "Focus Fixer" from another vendor which is currently not available for CS3

a quick trial runs shows that it works and gives good results which are different that what I get using conventional sharpeners even with rather extreme focus adjustment one does not get those halos

Enhancer mode seems unchanged and still does a great job

still has my pet peeve of having no way (other than running it or looking at the date) of telling which version you have

AKVIS Enhancer CommentaryEnhancer 8 - Version: 8.0, 3/18/2008 02:57AM PST

In the current version (8.0) they fixed some serious bugs in both editions. The plugin works good now, as well as the stand-alone version.
They wrote at Retouchpro forum that the next version of Enhancer will be released soon, with a new mode - "Focus". It sounds intriguingly.

AKVIS Enhancer CommentaryVERSION 6 IS GREAT, VERSION 7 SEEMS BROKEN - Version: 7.0, 8/16/2007 04:42PM PST

I have used v6 and lower for several years and love it despite the high price
v7 includes some improvements to the preview window (adjustable size) plus they say some performance improvements they say

V7 is bundled with a HDDR function for which I have no use, which seems to justify a lack of a reasonable cost upgrade

I could not evaluate v7 since it seems to be broken- it loads slowly and performs much slower than the previous versions

the preview function seems not to work at all (in v6 slider changes were reflected with almost no delay in the preview window) now nothing until the full process is performed which takes quite a while 10s of seconds (on 10 MP images) this delay makes the product unusable

I did not test the standalone product

I am using the CS2 version perhaps the available CS3 version is better

The only response from AKVIS is to use V6

side note -pet peeve they do not show the version number in the software info only the date-making it unclear which version one has, v6 is dated June 13

When this thing works it is great, not as was suggested in a magazine review unnecessary if you have a Levels function

My desktop intel mac exceeds their recommended configuration
