Product Description:

SimpleCrypt is my first attempt at an easy-to-use Java Swing encryption program. It uses password based encryption and the 3DES algorithm at 168 bits. Encryption can be a little a slow, so be patient. The application uses the .enc extension to signify files it has encrypted. Mac OS X, Windows and Multiplatform (jar) versions are included, as well as source. This allows you to port your encrypted files to different computers and decrypt them. I am not responsible for any lost data due to (probably improper) use of this program. Released under the GNU GPL.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • Java 1.4 or higher
Tested on Mac OS X 10.4.2

SimpleCrypt ReviewPerfect for USB Drives - Version: 1.6.2, 10/19/2005 06:17PM PST

Very useful as it has a multi platform format (java) along with Mac and Windows versions. It is very compact and produces a secure file in a sensible time. The modifications to leave the original file were wise as it highlights that the encrypted file is only as safe as the computer it was created on.
A very responsive developer at the head of this product and the source code published under GPL contribute to this tool.

SimpleCrypt Reviewnot sure it's really secure - Version: 1.6, 10/13/2005 02:53PM PST

I took a look at the code. It calls file.delete, and from what little I could find online, I don't think that java function does any sort of diskwipe. What this means (if I'm right) is that the unencrypted copy of file you encrypted is still on your drive and recoverable w/ the usual tools. And thats NotAGoodThing.
