NTI Shadow ReviewUnreliable, support is terrible - Version: 3.3.03, 11/20/2008 08:51AM PST

microdev

Unreliable
I received the product with a drive purchase, and later paid for an upgrade to the latest 4x release. On an initial G5 test system, the product refuses to copy files and often does not report the error. Manually copying the file through the Finder from source to destination works just fine however. Checked the privileges and everything is fine - who knows why it fails? The logs provide very little information but the bottom line is that you end up with an incomplete backup. When I check the destinations, even though an error was reported for many files, some of these files did actually copy. With 100K files, there is no way to verify the backup without using another sync program which completely defeats the purpose.

Horrible Support!
When trying to run this from a current 1st gen. Mac Pro, the product crashes immediately with an array out of bounds error. I contacted the support group twice, waited several weeks, and got no reply at all - not even an automated mailer with, "We'll get back to you!"

Summary
I've been managing networks and entire enterprise IT shops for 20+ years and Mac backup is hands down the biggest pain in the butt I have ever encountered. I was hoping that this was a simple mirror option to the traditional (and equally flaky) Retrospect but alas, this is unreliable and completely without support which is everything you don't need in backup software.

NTI Shadow ReviewGood product, company sucks - Version: 3.0, 1/29/2008 12:00AM PST

I purchased and used Shadow 2 and then upgraded to Shadow 3. I recently reinstall the OS to get a fresh start with Leopard. I downloaded the laster version of NTI shadow, installed it, and tried to enter my serial number. Shadow didn't accept it. I contacted support here's their reply.

Basically, they make you use a serial number, then they break the serial number with an update, then they make you buy a new one! No other company in the world does this! Every other company I have ever gotten a serial number for will gladly resolve a reinstall issue. To make it work, this is backup software!

There are so many other good back up programs out there (CCC for example, which is free), there os NO REASON to waste your money on this NTI product. Assuming they are just as obnoxious with their other product, I recommend avoiding this company at all costs.

From NTI Support:

I am really sorry but there is not much else I can do. Did you save your
original installation file which worked with that serial number before? It
doesn't make much sense that it worked before but no longer works now. It's
important to save all program installation files that are purchased and
downloaded from the internet. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience but
there is not much else I can do to help you. Please understand that we
cannot continue to supply new serial numbers for customer throughout the
years without repurchasing a license. I wish there was more I could do to
help. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns I can
help you with.

Have a wonderful week.

Best Regards,
