Product Description:

Similar to the way Apple Mail uses a badge to display the number of unread messages from its Dock icon, Docktopus allows users to overlay custom badges on their Dock icons. These badges give users a convenient source for real-time information about the items in their Dock, such as an application's CPU or Memory usage. With badges like the iTunes Control and iCal Event Peek, Docktopus provides users with a new way of using their Dock - allowing them to control and get information from applications directly from their Dock icons.

Docktopus adds the following functionality to the Dock:

  • Access statistics like drive space available, the number of files in a folder and the size of a specific file or folder present in the Dock.
  • View upcoming iCal events by simply rolling the mouse across the badge.
  • Access commonly used files and nested folders from a pop-up menu.
  • Play QuicKeys Shortcuts, AppleScripts and Automator Workflows.
  • Get instant access to general information such as CPU usage or Memory consumed by a given application.
  • Display iTunes track information, cover art and control iTunes.
  • View the number of unread Mail messages in specified accounts and mark messages as junk.

In conjunction with the launch of Docktopus, a development kit will be made available to the Mac OS X developer community that will allow them to create their own badges. For additional information on the Docktopus SDK, visit www.startly.com/docktopus-sdk.

This is a nice little application and really does what it says. Works great on MacBook.

Docktopus ReviewNewbies may like it... - Version: 1.0.2, 2/25/2006 10:28AM PST

Should come with large warning written 500 pixels wide
'Only for fast macs and giant screens' Very clunky on a
Ti-book and a mid range G4 tower when I tested it - Lower
end G4s and G3 iMacs etc, forget it.
I like my dock icons small and for those like me - this app
is again useless. Good idea but too CPU intensive and at
smaller dock icon sizes too ridiculous to be of use.
Magnification is a nightmare of screen redraws -
I trashed it as it's just expensive eye candy for newbies
and techno-posers.

At first I found this utility to be pricey and lacking but after using it for a few days I found Docktopus to be very useful and informative. I love being able to hover over the mail peek badge and view who the mail is from and the subject of each unread peice of mail. The folder count and individual cpu meters are very informative. The ical event and itunes badges are also very handy. Overall I find the utlity very informative and did end up purchasing it. I am looking forward to developers creating docktopus badges of their own.
