There was a time (1.2-ish, 1.3-ish) where Transmission seemed to be going through a rough time. I'm not sure if it was just a perfect storm of some major bugs, the need to divest it of some legacy code (eg: dropping older OSes), or some of the major rewrites required to get the application under the new license (ie: to cut off that crook W*t*n*be), but it seemed to be handling files, trackers, pieces, peers, the whole lot badly. Not all at once, but one then another, then another, with one or two corruption problems as well. I used to keep previous versions around in case I needed to roll back.

I don't do that any more. Nor do I (grudgingly) keep Azureus/Vuze around as a fallback. Since probably 1.5-ish onwards, T has returned to its days of greatness. I've upgraded from 1.75 to 1.76 by simply overwriting the old version. I don't worry about those problems any more. I know that there will always be glitches - it is *software* after all, and no application or OS can ever be perfect - but the storm has passed, and T has regained its place as both my preferred and recommended torrent client. There really is nothing like it, esp for the price. It's easy, reliable, stable, fast, doesn't hog every resource, has all the important features, and most of the nice-to-haves (Vuze has many more features, but they're mostly ridiculous). I can give T to both a newbie and an old hand and they'll both be happy.

Transmission Troubleshooting Report1.7.5 BROKE UTORRENT - Version: 1.75, 9/14/2009 10:20PM PST

Something is MASSIVELY WRONG with this version. It won't download my torrents and after I tried 1.7.5 Utorrent and Azurues won't either. I rebooted but they're still broken

1.7.5 uploads sometimes but was way (99%) faster in 1.7.4

Running Leopard 10.5.6 on a 17" MacBook Pro. with 4GB of memory. I have an 25/2.5 Mbit/s Cable connection, my Macbook Pro is connected to the router via the 1Gbit/s ethernet connection

I hope 1.7.5 gets banned for breaking the other apps, that's crap

Transmission Review"Application Not Responding" - Version: 1.74, 8/30/2009 03:11PM PST

If I could have a dollar for each time I've had to force quit this app because it is listed as "Application Not Responding" - I would surely have a 100+ doller more in my pocket right now. Why do these open-source "developers" never get it right? *jesus* …

This software works, but still needs that extra little something to make it a great app - and thats STABILITY! Can these open-source "developers" say that?

Please learn to write high quality Mac software for the Mac platform - or be gone!

hmmm. Everything worked fantastic until 1.74, just a few days ago. This is the 1st time this program has given me ANY problems, however.

Transmission Troubleshooting ReportInfinite progress bars appeared in 1.73 release - Version: 1.73, 7/31/2009 11:28AM PST

Transmission is my preferred bit torrent client. It's great. However, a cosmetic bug has appeared in the current release. The progress bars go on for ever - even if you resize the app window you can't see the end of the bars!

Transmission ReviewHighly recommended - Version: 1.73, 7/18/2009 11:52PM PST

I am a Transmission fan since version 1.6x. While this version fixes stuff that were not an issue for me, it shows that the developers are actively interested in keeping the product as fresh as possible. It seems to offer features (like the bad peer blocker function and a per-torrent priority) that other P2P clients do not have. It's setup was intuitive for a novice, like me, and overtime the setup options have become familiar to me; what I am trying to say is that it comes operational 'out of the box' and gives you the time to learn how tweaks may be able to improve its performance in your ISP environment. In my experience, the concepts of P2P is something that takes a while to fully understand (if that is possible) and the Transmission product gives you the time to grabble with understanding what that environment is all about while using the P2P world.

My wish is that a user adjustable parameter be added to allow the user (me) to set the number of seeding peers per torrent. Now, this number is now fixed at 15. A global parameter would be just fine; a parameter per torrent would be elegant. I have plenty of bandwidth that is not being used and if I could offer more seeders per torrent then I would feel as a 'better' contributor to the P2P concept.

This product alone would be reason enough to switch to a Mac if I were a Windows user.

Transmission Troubleshooting ReportUpon finishing download, transfers still switch to 'seed forever' despite reaching upload limit. - Version: 1.72, 6/21/2009 09:27PM PST

Wizardling
For months now Transmission nightlies and stable builds will switch a transfer to 'seed forever', no matter that it reached it's upload limit before downloading was finished (I tend to be able to upload faster than I can download).

Bug reports have been ignored insisting that I must purchase screen video capture software and make a video of this occurring before I will be believed by Transmission developers. Sorry - I'm not going to buy software for one time use.

Also 'check for update' remains broken many months after this was reported.

when you just want to use a torrent this is the way to go...I'm not going to test my connection with 4 different clients and declare one faster than the other, of screw around in the settings to squeeze some extra juice out of my downloads.

This little guy does everythign I need, super simple to use and figure out, and offers a pretty fair amount of options as needed (day time throttle control is something I wish my neighbors would use too)

Transmission ReviewA really good client! - Version: 1.71, 6/13/2009 10:18AM PST

Transmission is a really great bittorrent client. With a very easy to use interface, it is easy to configure and it's easy to manage your torrents. Creating them is a snap, too, in case you're one of those who likes to give back.

With the last couple of rounds of feature enhancements, transmission now lacks very few features of other clients. I still wish it allowed queue reordering, and I'm not convinced it pays much attention to "priority" settings, and I would really like to have the ability to manage upload slots. These are the only shortcomings I can think of at the moment.

I have right now 98 torrents in the queue and Transmission is running just as quietly in the background as ever, with no increased use of resources or any signs of unresponsiveness. I have also been using it without incident since v1.3 at a private tracker which officially discourages it because of problems with earlier version.

Transmission is a truly great piece of software which is steadily growing and developing. With just a very few features missing, Transmission is a "must try" for anyone looking into bittorrent clients.
