Matlab ReviewGood but ... - Version: 7.9, 10/31/2009 10:24AM PST

It is a complex software with powerful features and tools for engineers.

But it has:

numeric errors,
not all previous documents are compatible with the latest version, so you have to hold version 7.4, 7.6, 7.8, 7.9. It is hell of work when you dont know which document has been opened with which version.

GUI feature is not recommended for complex projects(very buggy).

The poeple from service are very arrogant. This is my personal experience.

Matlab ReviewAmazing software - Version: 7.5, 11/26/2007 03:29PM PST

Matlab, unlike Mathematica, has amazing documentation. It's programming language is also superior, and supports a more familiar C-like syntax that makes coding quick and easy. Even its source code editor is impressive, and again superior to that of Mathematica. While Mathematica does symbolic computation better than Matlab, it's in many ways irrelevant because many times even the examples in Mathematica's documentation will not run due to various syntax errors. In every other respect Matlab is a superior product to Mathematica, so for those students and researchers who are looking for a powerful math-related program, look no further than this. It is the best thing you can get probably on any platform, and certainly on OS X.

Matlab CommentaryDoes this work with Intel Macs? - Version: 7.2, 3/1/2006 07:40AM PST

I've heard that previous version didn't work on Intel Macs. This is one piece of software that is preventing me from upgrading to a new Intel Mac and I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting it to work.

Matlab ReviewMATLAB support on Mac OS X getting stronger. - Version: 7.1, 9/6/2005 12:08AM PST

The return of MATLAB to the Mac has been welcome among scientists and engineers. Leveraging off of Apple's JVM support and X11, MATLAB is as capable on the Mac as any other Unix platform, perhaps more so. The Mathworks, with this release, has confirmed their commitment to refine and tune this tool for our platform of choice. They have rewritten their compiler on the Mac, and while I haven't done any formal benchmarks yet, I think 7.1 is distinctly faster. They have provided parity with other platforms in the plot tool functionality.

True, the interface could be far more refined, but it is certainly no worse than the PC implementation, and an argument could be made that it is better in some ways. The most damning negative comment about this product is the price which puts MATLAB out of reach of most users, especially the cost of the add on toolboxes.

The bottom line is that this tool is a standard in many fields, and the Mathworks is showing vigorous support for the Mac today and I for one welcome this change.

Professor Moler,

Would it kill your company to write a decent front end for OS X? Or for any platform, for that matter.

Matlab Reviewmuch improved but still buggy - Version: 7.0.1, 1/3/2005 06:50PM PST

Matlab 7 is an improvement. It no longer gives constant error messages about buckyballs or whatnot. The interface has also been cleaned up a bit. It still has some serious user interface issues. Oftentimes scripts refuse to respond to either command-. or control-C and I have to force quit Matlab if I need to abort a run. Also, I frequently get a weird bug where suddenly all the text in the active window is selected and the contents of the window races up to the top (of the script or if the command window the top of the remembered text). The escape key sometimes helps. Sometimes I have to close and then reopen the window. Sometimes I have to just quit the program and restart. VERY irritating and slows productivity. Also the variable inspector is maddeningly slow, to the point that I can't tell if it missed a click or if it is working on it. If they can just get the UI problems fixed this would be a very solid program. I use it constantly despite the problems.
