Product Description:

Textpander is a utility that helps you type more efficiently and more accurately. Textpander listens to what you type and inserts predefined text snippets on the fly whenever you enter their corresponding abbreviations.

Here are a few examples for what you can do with Textpander:
  • Insert standard greetings, text fragments, and signatures - including formatted text and pictures.
  • Insert the current date and time in any format you prefer.
  • Use editor-independent code templates and have Textpander position the cursor just where it needs to be.
  • Type special characters without having to launch any special characters palette.
  • Have Textpander correct typos automatically.
  • Import text snippets from other typing utilities.
Textpander is controlled from its own preference pane inside your System Preferences. Designed for easy handling, Textpander blends in perfectly with your operating system.

What's new in this version:

  • If you have configured Textpander to "Expand automatically when... a delimiter character has been typed after an abbreviation", you can now choose whether the delimiter character that triggered the expansion should vanish on expansion ("keep delimiter"/"abandon delimiter"). To override this setting for a specific snippet, add a "Keep delimiter" specifier ("%+", without the surrounding quotation marks) or an "Abandon delimiter" specifier ("%-") to the very end of your snippet.
  • You can now use your own local snippets collection and subscribe to a remote snippets file at the same time.
  • Improved Textpander's compatibility with the Terminal and other applications that don't behave like standard OS X text editors.
  • Available Languages: English, German.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9

Textpander ReviewI really wish this worked - Version: 2.7.1, 11/17/2009 09:04AM PST

This is a great idea poorly implemented. The big problem I am having now is that TextExpander doesn't always run. I then have to go into the preferences and "stop" it, and "restart" it. If this did what it is meant to do, it would be great.

For those of you trying to use MacSpeech Dictate, there is a conflict between TextExpander and MacSpeech Dictate. When TextExpander is running, MacSpeech Dictate reverses certain letters in words that are spoken.

Of course, it is possible that the problem is with MacSpeech Dictate, however, that particular developer has shown absolutely no interest in correcting this. Their solution is that people should stop using TextExpander. It would be nice if these developers either got together and repair this problem, or the people at could take up the problem and fixed it on their end. MacSpeech Dictate clearly doesn't care.

I was a longtime user of TypeIt4Me, the first Mac app that did this sort of thing. TypeIt4Me is really the granddaddy of these sorts of apps, but unfortunately, like a grandaddy it has sort of gotten a little slow and outdated. I switched to TextExpander because of expansion issues with TypeIt4Me, issues that I brought to the developers attention and he could not fix. Basically it couldn't keep up with me when I was typing fast and would expand words in the wrong place. I have only used TextExpander for a week, but I have not once had the same issue. Also, I have found the user interface more intuitive. TypeIt4Me is still a great product, so it is worth checking out if you are in the market for this kind of utility, but for now I have happily made the switch and would recommend TextExpander.
