TextExpander ReviewI really wish this worked - Version: 2.7.1, 11/17/2009 09:04AM PST

This is a great idea poorly implemented. The big problem I am having now is that TextExpander doesn't always run. I then have to go into the preferences and "stop" it, and "restart" it. If this did what it is meant to do, it would be great.

TextExpander CommentaryBroken? - Version: 2.7, 10/15/2009 08:04AM PST

For those of you trying to use MacSpeech Dictate, there is a conflict between TextExpander and MacSpeech Dictate. When TextExpander is running, MacSpeech Dictate reverses certain letters in words that are spoken.

Of course, it is possible that the problem is with MacSpeech Dictate, however, that particular developer has shown absolutely no interest in correcting this. Their solution is that people should stop using TextExpander. It would be nice if these developers either got together and repair this problem, or the people at could take up the problem and fixed it on their end. MacSpeech Dictate clearly doesn't care.

I was a longtime user of TypeIt4Me, the first Mac app that did this sort of thing. TypeIt4Me is really the granddaddy of these sorts of apps, but unfortunately, like a grandaddy it has sort of gotten a little slow and outdated. I switched to TextExpander because of expansion issues with TypeIt4Me, issues that I brought to the developers attention and he could not fix. Basically it couldn't keep up with me when I was typing fast and would expand words in the wrong place. I have only used TextExpander for a week, but I have not once had the same issue. Also, I have found the user interface more intuitive. TypeIt4Me is still a great product, so it is worth checking out if you are in the market for this kind of utility, but for now I have happily made the switch and would recommend TextExpander.

I have been a licensed TextExpander user for years now, and it has never worked correctly, although I keep upgrading, but will not the next go around. I have since added Typinator to my collection and Typinator always works correctly.

I give it full marks. Nevertheless, does any one know about a free alternative even if it may not be as wonderful as text expander?

TextExpander Commentary This program could be very useful. - Version: 2.5.2, 2/18/2009 10:04PM PST

I really want to like this program. I really do. It has a lot of cool features. However, I have a great deal of difficulty getting it to do exactly what I want to do. For example, suppose I use the shortcut "ed" and have it set for "Eastern District of New York." Here is where the problem comes in. Sometimes, I type a word that could have "ed" on the end and don't use the suffix "ed." Then I type a space. Then I realized that I should have used a word with an ending of "ed." When I backspace once and simply type "ed", it types out "Eastern District of New York." It should have recognized that I was merely adding the letters "ed" to the end of the previous word. While this may seem like a small complaint, it's very annoying, because if you don't constantly watch the screen you can end up with results that are not to your liking.

TextExpander Reviewalmost works as described = FAIL - Version: 2.5.1, 2/2/2009 04:58PM PST

I need to be able to expand abbreviations whenever I type them, not when the program decides to expand them. As it is, it requires you to place a delimiter- a space - before each abbreviation.

For instance, lets say I tell it to expand the abbreviation 'an' to 'anti'. If I type 'I bought an anque lamp' it automatically expands to 'I bought an antique lamp'. But if I type 'I am going to sanago', it does NOT expand to 'I am going to santiago', in fact it does nothing at all, because there is no space before the abbreviation. There is no way to turn this behavior off. It even does this is you set it not to use delimiters. Very poor design.

Now, it does give you a way to include a backspace in the abbreviation (it displays as %<) - so you could set the expand text to to '%<anti', and then type 's aniago' to have it automatically backspace over the space, so you get 'santiago ', except, this feature doesn't actually work at all, and what you get is 's %<antiago'.

I actually need to be able to expand shortcuts in the middle of words, in fact what I want to do relies on it, so this program is worse than useless: it actually made my work slower than just typing out the full word every time. Add to that the time I wasted setting it up and testing it for nothing, and I feel like I should be sending a bill to the developer.

1 star, only because it won't let me choose 0 stars.

TextExpander ReviewCauses Recurring Mini-Freezes - Version: 2.5, 11/4/2008 09:39AM PST

I love this software. But version 2.5 causes a major problem that renders it almost unusable---mini freezes. When TE 2.5 is enabled, my Mac (MacBookPro, Leopard) locks up every few minutes, for about 5-10 seconds. Then it unlocks, and whatever clicks or keystrokes were made during the mini freeze usually come spinning out in a rush.

While it is possible to work through the problem, as you can imagine it's very annoying. I have tried many solutions, figuring that it is a problem on my end, to no avail. I recently emailed the developer and have not heard back yet if others are having similar issues. I tried TE version 1 and did not encounter the same issue. But it does not have all the features I want in a typing utility.

For now I have moved on to Typinator.
