4G iPodLinux Installer Reviewproblems even after un-installing - Version: 0.4, 10/8/2005 08:34PM PST

slipknot2k7
There are some good features with this, but they are only fun to use for a day or so. I've also had many problems with switching from standard to linux version (i think you restart and hold play to start standard, pretty much anything else starts linux). The way it plays music is much worse than the standard ipod OS, the linux version stops the song when you goto the menu. There are a lot more games, but playing games on an ipod isnt really all that great, no matter what the game is. Also, after i un-installed ipodlinux, it still wanted to start up on linux OS, Which is very annoying. Unless you have a desperate urge to play a few more games, and watch a cube spin, then i wouldnt recommend this.

4G iPodLinux Installer ReviewHuh? mac format required? - Version: 0.4, 8/24/2005 08:26AM PST

Hey just so you know, I used .2 and .3 with a windows filesystem(fat32 I guess, if that's what XP uses) via my osx laptop and I had exactly NO issues, so why is the installer now being limited to just hfs format? when it has a fat32 format I can have it mount easily on all OS's without problem as an external HD.

I had installed ipod linux on my ipod phot 30Gb to be able to record sounds, the problem is that when I tried to do it I recieve this message: Recording is unsupported on this hardware. So I can't record with a 4G iPod? Does anyone experienced this? So for now on I will unistall it and wait for version 0.4.

4G iPodLinux Installer ReviewPretty cool - Version: 0.3, 8/20/2005 10:16PM PST

Works without problem - I actually thought it would have to reformat or otherwise mess up my iPod to install, but it went happily in with what was already there... so now I've got Linux, and all my old stuff, happily co-existing... don't know what I'm going to do with the Linux stuff, but hey, geek's don't ask silly questions like "why?". ;)

I've been looking forward to linux on my 4G ipod (the boring mono version) for a while now - no good reason just for the fun of it.

It installed fine - booted into linux fine (even thought I'd chosen apple as the default). Linux works great, except for the click wheel - which was unusable sensitive (even on the lowest setting).

And then I discovered that it was unable to 'dual-boot' back into the Apple OS. (happily the uninstaller worked just fine - restore functionality to my ipod).

I've tested it on a 60GB iPod photo, and the installer works just fine. I could easily dual-boot between Apple iPod software and Linux, and take advantage of both. In my opinion the linux software is not as good as the original if we speak about listening to music, but for all the other extras (apps and games) it's great.
Oh, and video playback is very good, too bad we can't have yet the audio in the video too.
If you have an iPod, you should give it a try.
