Product Description:

SteerMouse is an advanced driver for USB and Bluetooth mice. It also supports Apple Mighty Mouse very well.

SteerMouse can assign various functions to buttons that Apple's software does not allow, including double-clicks, modifier clicks, application switching, assignment of shortcut keys, "snap to" cursor movement, which moves the cursor to target (such as an OK button), and more.

SteerMouse lets you control the cursor's Sensitivity on top of the Tracking Speed. (Apple's software only allows adjustment for the Tracking Speed.) By adjusting both configurations, you can customize the ideal setting for the cursor to fit the movements of your hand.

What's new in this version:

  • Problem solved where the cursor speed would not be configured correctly when switching user accounts by using the fast user switching.
  • Added F17-F19 to the 'Input Shortcut Key' function (Mac OS X 10.5 or later).
  • Problem solved where the modifier keys that are assigned to buttons would not work with the screen zoom.
  • Problem solved where the 'Select from Running Applications' button in the Application Register Window would not work.
  • Problems solved where buttons of certain mice were not recognized.
  • Various other fixes and improvements.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.4.3 or higher

SteerMouse ReviewWorks perfectly with Logitech MX518 - Version: 3.9, 8/15/2008 06:02AM PST

I have used USB Overdrive for many years. If you love a great mouse, USBO used to be the must-have application. It always does more than the mouse company's software for Macs, especially Logitech's (which is just horrid and buggy beyond belief).

HOWEVER, the current version of USB Overdrive (10.4.8) just doesn't work with many of the more modern mice out there, such as the MX518.

lI think Logitech mice are the best out there, especially if you are a fan of shortcuts. From a click on the mouse, you can use all of Exposé's features, switch back and forth on any browser and open a folder.

But, Logitech's last great corded mouse that supposedly worked with Macs was the great MX510. That's no longer available. They've upgraded it to the MX518, but their site says "only works with PC."

I've used the mouse software USB Overdrive for years. Beats the pants off of Logitech's software by a mile. However, the developer hasn't upgraded it for a long time, and try as I did, I couldn't get it to recognize all 7 of Logitech's buttons. I wrote Alessandro, but never did not hear back from him regarding a fix for the 518. His site does promise a new upgrade, but that's been over a year ago.

I finally completely uninstalled USB Overdrive and installed the newer SteerMouse. Works *perfectly* with the new MX518.

If you love a good mouse, but were stymied by how many of them seemed to be PC only, my guess is that any mouse will now work with SteerMouse.

USB Overdrive may eventually come out with a workable version, and make it a worthwhile mouse application. But given the length of time between upgrades, and the lack of response when emailed, I get the feeling the developer has moved on to other projects, so my suggestion would be to go with SteerMouse.

I often use the zoom (ctrl-wheel), and I think it could be useful to add the option to zoom with the wheel pushed. It seems it cannot be done right now (can not apply a modifier key to the wheel)

SteerMouse ReviewWorks well with Logitech G9 - Version: 3.9, 4/2/2008 04:51PM PST

I first tried USB Overdrive but this software would not recognise my Logitech G9. As a result the G9 was restricted to its MacOSX default 2-button operation. This G9 is a multi-button high speed gamer mouse intended for Windows only.

SteerMouse's default settings were spot on. So this G9 will be a good replacement for my MX Revolution and MX-1000 mice which both were suspected of causing hard hangs of the Mac Pro. Maybe it was the Logitech Control Center which caused my problems. Time will tell if the substitution has been worthwhile.

What can I say? SteerMouse has no problems that I can detect. A good utility indeed.
