DTV ReviewOverrated - Version: 0.7, 2/22/2006 04:32AM PST

karabumm
DTV, now renamed into "Democracy Player", has countless shortcomings:
- often hogs the CPU while downloading stuff
- try playing a video while it hogs the cpu and the video will stutter
- strange interface doesn't follow the "select, then choose action" paradigm evolved over the past 20 years. In DTV, every "selection+action" combination has its own button on the screen, so you might have 10 play buttons, 10 delete buttons etc. This prohibits the app from offering even such basic functionality as "show movie in finder", because there isn't enough screen real estate. But "show movie in finder" is an absolute requirement in the first place because that would be the only way to play a video without having it stutter.

Good idea, very bad implementation.

The latest beta is faster and more stable than then the previous version, which was very stable and functional. This programme is a must for anyone that is bored of cable television and would like to explore some alternative media outlets. Looking forward to the development of this program and distribution platform with great anticipation. - Welll done to the production team! Wayne Coles-Janess - producer - ipso-facto productions

Hi, David with Participatory Culture here, thanks for letting us know. We believe we fixed the bug in DTV that was causing the main window not to open in some cases -- it seems to have been related to auto-download of some RSS feeds. Please check out the second beta version we're releasing soon for that version and other bug fixes. We'll be releasing updated versions regularly over the next few weeks until the full beta launch (including a Windows version). Feel free to send other comments to us :: feedback at ppolitics dot org. Thanks again. http://participatoryculture.org/
