Product Description:

MacENC is a full featured charting and navigation application that allows the use of the free NOAA S-57 ENC, International S-63 ENC and BSB raster marine charts on your Mac.

What's new in this version:

  • Fonts on S-57 ENC charts for on the water objects are more consistent with NOAA raster charts.
  • If an AIS transponder is connected AND a GPS receiver is not, the AIS transponder position, SOG and COG will be used for real-time plotting.
  • "!AIVDO" AIS transponder NMEA message processed. Allows your transponders position to plotted on the chart and shown in the AIS/RADAR panel target list.
  • A BZ2 file (which contains a GRIB file) can be opened from the "Open GRIB..." menu item on the "Weather" menu.
  • "Request GRIB" requests a 50 x 50 degree GRIB file from the SailDocs server, however if the "Reduced Download Size" menu item is checked, the request will be 20 x 20 degrees.
  • "Auto Next" on the "Route" menu will default on, when the "Goto" button on the "Routes" window is selected.
  • "Position" Format has been moved from the "View" menu to the MacENC Preferences "Units" dialog.
  • KML (Google Earth) routes can be imported via the "From File.." "Transfer" menu item on the "Routes" menu.

MacENC works with the free NOAA S-57 vector ENCs and BSB raster charts.

Recommended for use with MacENC, a DVD with the entire Maptech BSB NOAA raster chart library...

This the only ENC displayer on the Mac platform as of now. I'm very thankful that it exists. ENC charts are nautical chart database made available for free to the public by NOAA. These databases are the basis of vector charts that's becoming increasing popular (as oppose to raster charts). There are many PC nautical charting softwares but precious few for Mac, let alone one that can display ENC files. There is much room for improvement but it's a very good initial effort.

The sample chart included is for a very small region, you can go to noaa's website: http://chartmaker.noaa.gov and download ALL the charts for every major U.S. port (~300 MB). The demo version happily reads them in.

I'd give 5 stars for this unique and very useful program, but the performance is a little too slow on my iBook G4 (800 MHz), so I have to give it 4 stars.
