Product Description:

Inkscape is an open source drawing tool with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw that uses the W3C standard scalable vector graphics format (SVG). Some supported SVG features include basic shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, and grouping. In addition, Inkscape supports Creative Commons meta-data, node-editing, layers, complex path operations, text-on-path, and SVG XML editing. It also imports several formats like EPS, Postscript, JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats

What's new in this version:

fix several crashes on windows, Mac OS X, and other packaging issues which have come up from our last successful release, 0.44, which introduced substantial features like graphical layers, clipping and masking support, and native PDF export with transparency.

I'm not going to give this a bad rating mainly because it's free and the developers worked hard enough to port a Mac version. If you can't afford anything else then this will do. Unfortunately anything using X11 (at least everything I've ever experienced) is a horse's patoot. It's kind of like driving a diesel car every once in a while when you're used to a regular car. But like I said, it works.

Inkscape ReviewBest "first class" SVG editor I know of... - Version: 0.47pre1, 7/7/2009 09:21AM PST

Other apps, like Lineform and Illustrator, can read and write SVG files, but Inkscape does the best job of it. I'll agree with other reviewers that the interface is a bit clunky, but that's what you get in this territory of portable applications. So if SVG is something you need to work with, Inkscape is the right tool for the job (in my opinion). And the price is certainly right.

A poorly thought out editor with a poor interface that isn't at all adapted to OS X. Install this if you want horrid typography, non-standard keyboard shortcuts (it's control+c/etc here), failure to confirm most actions (eg, press command+c as per every other Mac program and there'll be no indication that you've made an error, press control+c and there'll be no indication that you've done the correct thing — unlike real Mac software which flashes the relevant part of the menubar) and little extras like open/save dialogues that don't know where any of the usual system paths like 'Documents' are located. Furthermore, the interface is clearly inspired by CorelDraw but lacks any of its finesse, instead being oversized, clumsy and extremely poorly laid out. Wonder why every object you place seems to have "O: 10" according to the status bar? It's because the object has Opacity of 100%, but thankfully the developers have saved us all time by abbreviating all opacities to just the first two digits, and little idiotic mistakes like that characterise the entire program.
