Product Description:

Inkscape is an open source drawing tool with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw that uses the W3C standard scalable vector graphics format (SVG). Some supported SVG features include basic shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, and grouping. In addition, Inkscape supports Creative Commons meta-data, node-editing, layers, complex path operations, text-on-path, and SVG XML editing. It also imports several formats like EPS, Postscript, JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats

What's new in this version:

The Inkscape community today is announcing the release of the newest version of its open source vector graphics editor. Inkscape 0.46 is a major update that introduces native PDF support. The implementation of PDF support in Inkscape provides an easy, open source solution to editing PDF documents.

Tons of new features and performance improvements are included in this release. Dialogs now have the ability to be docked to the editing window. Gradients can be edited completely on-canvas. The new Paint Bucket Tool fills bounded areas with color. A new 3D Box tool helps create perspective-correct drawings. A new Tweak tool provides an intuitive method for editing paths and painting objects. The new Live Path Effects feature can create "brushes" and various organic effects on paths. Improvements to color management include support for color spaces other than sRGB. Most SVG filters are now implemented, and a new powerful UI is provided for editing filter stacks.

Inkscape Usage TipInkScape on MacBook Pro Intel Duo - Version: 0.46, 10/11/2008 12:24PM PST

Okay, I finally got everything running today. I had to download X11 (which comes I guess on the startup disk, but I downloaded from internet for INTEL Mac). I was able to open my tiff and what I want is to save it as a vectorized copy for a magazine ad. I did also find the instruction manual... it took a while on the InkScape site to find what was needed, but if you keep going through all of the links it is there. I will report back when I figure out how to use it .... looks like a Microsoft kind of window but then I've only used Macs and not Linux.

Inkscape Usage TipMust update X11 to work. - Version: 0.46, 5/11/2008 12:47AM PST

This X11 App requires the latest builds of X11 from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki in order to work. This X11 update will get overwritten whenever Apple updates X11 in either a software update or separately. For me, it's too much effort to bother updating X11 and potentially have it overwritten when 10.5.3 comes out. The interface in X11 doesn't look that nice anyway. Aparently there is a Mac native version in the works and I'll look at it again if that comes out.
