Apparently Apple has tweaked tar for Tiger, to include resource forks (the same way they tweaked srm for Panther, for the same reason). That makes "backup" (so-named) unusable for Panther, which still uses the garden-variety tar command. High marks for knowledge of shell arcana like
[ $? != 0 ] && usage
, various dings for relying on Terminal (or cron, or launchd) for error checking. I used my own script to clone to a Firewire drive, and recommend Carbon Copy Cloner for most casual users who need knowledgeable backup services.
