Product Description:

This small package provides unattended backups for MacOS. When used on MacOS 10.4 (Tiger), it will generate appropriately-sized, tar-format archives, including the resource forks, in dated, sequentially-numbered burn folders on the user's Desktop, ready to burn to DVDs or CDs. (With MacOS 10.2-3, the ready-to-burn archives will not include the resource fork, and will be in folders with the suffix .fpbf).

If you have enough disk space, you can back-up your entire system. You can optionally back-up only files newer than a specified date for incremental back-ups. If you are short of disk space, you can use the -m option to manually burn each volume.

The default paths to back-up are configured into the script, so usage for regular back-ups is simply backup in a terminal, or you can double-click backup in the Finder. Optionally, the paths to back-up and various options can be specified on the command line.

What's new in this version:

The earliest release of backup 1.0 included a serious documentation bug and did not include the restore-backup script. Please update if your release does not include the restore-backup script.

backup Commentaryresource forks are backed up ONLY in Tiger! - Version: 1.0, 7/5/2005 10:00AM PST

Apparently Apple has tweaked tar for Tiger, to include resource forks (the same way they tweaked srm for Panther, for the same reason). That makes "backup" (so-named) unusable for Panther, which still uses the garden-variety tar command. High marks for knowledge of shell arcana like <code>[ $? != 0 ] && usage</code>, various dings for relying on Terminal (or cron, or launchd) for error checking. I used my own script to clone to a Firewire drive, and recommend Carbon Copy Cloner for most casual users who need knowledgeable backup services.
