BreakQuest ReviewIntensely addictive - Version: 1.0.3, 9/17/2005 10:29PM PST

The shareware fee is a rounding error in my checkbook compared to lost productivity coinciding with my discovery of this game... d

About the only boring thing about this game is the long start-up process; also, I'm looking forward to a selection of window sizes, rather than the single small one I'm stuck with if I want to play in that mode.

BreakQuest ReviewVery nice - Version: 1.0.3, 7/31/2005 06:23PM PST

multiball, Multiball! MULTIBALL!!

Well done. I've been waiting for such a good version of Arkanoid. I love the way the physics work in this - altering the properties of the barrier, the shape of the ball and so forth. However, it is quite graphically intensive, but it does run fast enough on my iBook, and of course the G5. A goos option for the developers might be to give an option for an "ultra lean" mode, where the graphics are stripped right back to the basics. This would enable the game to run on even older hardware, and have a greater audience, or to allow those with more modern systems to get the most responsiveness.

I always liked playing Arkanoid with actual rotary paddles on my Commodore 64. I don't like playing with a mouse so much. So, I may build my own paddle just for this game. Of course, if anyone knows any off-the-shelf rotary paddles that are good value, I could just buy one.

Kudos also for the developers having a cheesy backstory told in cartoon panels. However, I do miss the cheesy space-based Arkanoid backstory, and that giant-Aztec-sculpture-head thingy that ate space ships (and spewed rocks, if I remember some of the levels correctly).

I mean, a game is just not the same if it doesn't incorporate a cheesy giant-Aztec-sculpture-head.

BreakQuest CommentarySame mouse issues as previous posters - Version: 1.0.1, 7/9/2005 04:08PM PST

I can't even select a level to begin playing. The mouse is stuck at the center of the screen, and while I can choose a game type and etc. using the arrow keys and the Return key, I can't manage to actually get to the gameplay itself.

Keep working on it, I really liked the way this looked!

BreakQuest Commentarycan't use because won't read trackpad - Version: 1.0.1, 7/9/2005 07:57AM PST

Has this ever been tested on a PowerBook? I can't move the mouse at all. It keeps snapping back to the center, so unfortunately, I can't even select a level. too bad, because the graphics look fun.

BreakQuest CommentaryMouse issues render game unplayable - Version: 1.0.1, 7/9/2005 07:39AM PST

Well, it looks like fun, but I can't even get off the startup screen. The moment you touch the mouse, the cursor just makes a beeline for the middle of the monitor and stays there. From that point on, the cursor barely responds to mouse movement at all. Periodically you can make it twitch a little, but that's it. I look forward to giving the game a try once this is addressed, but until then I got nothin'.

BreakQuest CommentaryFun game but.... - Version: 1.0.1, 7/8/2005 11:51AM PST

crawdad62_dotmac
it's a resource hog. Can't believe using this on a G5 iMac 2GHz with 1.5GB of RAM will suck up about 85% of my CPU cycles. Fans ramp up too while playing it. Doom 3 sure but a game like BreakQuest shouldn't be that processor intensive.

As I say it's fun but I have the same mouse concerns as everyone else.

BreakQuest Developer NoteGive us some more detail - Version: 1.0, 7/3/2005 09:09AM PST

Red Marble Games
Hi all, thanks for the feedback, we're committed to getting this mouse issue fixed, but could use some more info. First, if you don't like the "gyro-mouse" approach in the title screens, you can turn it off in the Options. Is that the issue? Maybe it should be off by default. And the sudden cursor move to the middle of the screen when you click an option is something we're working on. But once you get into the game and you're playing, is everything OK then? Let us know by emailing us at support (at) redmarblegames (dot) com. And thanks!

BreakQuest ReviewHUGE mouse issues hinder what looks like a great game - Version: 1.0, 7/2/2005 11:56PM PST

It's mostly in the title. The game looks beautiful, the physics engine seems terrific, the powerups are inventive and fun, and the puzzles are great. Unfortunately, the mouse implementation just downright sucks. Is there a good reason that the controller can't basically use the same sensitivity as the Finder and oh, say, every other program on my Mac? Not to mention that every time you click the mouse, the pointer runs back to the center of the screen.

Same issues as the previous guys. The mouse issue need BADLY to be fixed, and after that, I might consider paying $10 for a game as limited in scope as this.

BreakQuest ReviewGreat Game But... - Version: 1.0, 7/2/2005 02:14AM PST

Terrible port. Nurium has created one of the best breakout style games I've ever seen but the port by Red Marble leaves much to be desired. Less than elegant resolution switching and especially the mouse issues are annoyances I just don't need in a simple diversionary game like this. If those issues were fixed I could see maybe paying $10 for this.

BreakQuest ReviewLooks promising.. - Version: 1.0, 7/1/2005 09:08AM PST

- There is a big problem in this game on how the mouse handling. For instance at the hiscore screen, it is quite impossible to write a correct name. And also during the game, as soon as you click on the mouse the screen toggles to another application.

- pricing at $ 20 is way too much expensive. Maybe $ 10, no more.

- the game features are very original. Like the fact that you can shoot on your ball to change its own direction.

My conclusion is that it is actually a real good breakout, but overpriced, and with a mouse/controller bug to fix... 4 stars.
