Backed up source code destroyed - Version: 1.4, 8/19/2005 09:24AM PST
KermitNicely
On Wednesday August 17 the iBook G4 which I use for development, had a little mishap. I was formatting my backup drive getting ready to do a backup and playing Sesame Street games with my son. Then, the drive began making scraping sounds and the system became unresponsive. I could not do anything, I force shut down the computer and tried to boot again, but it would not do so. After working with Disk Utility and DiskWarrior, I could not recover the drive. Disk Utility refused to acknowledge its existance. Also, my backup disk was fully formatted. In short, I have lost all of the source code for iTattle, Widget Master and iYML. There will no longer be updates to these programs until I can reconstruct them which will take time. The downloadable versions of the apps are still online and downloadable. If you would like to make a small donation to help me get the iBook repaired, it would be greawtly appreciated. Thank you for understanding.
bug - fails to disable some widgets - Version: 1.4, 8/1/2005 08:34PM PST

if a widget of the same name, such as an older version is already in the "widgets (disabled) folder, then widge master fails to move the widget to that folder. would be better if it alerted you that say, "an older version of this widget already exists in the folder you are moving the widget to. do you want to replace the widget?" or somesuch.

I am posting this clip from a newletter published weekly by SmallDog.com called "Kibbles and Bytes". It speaks highly of Widget Master; read on...

Poor Performance? Blame it on Widgetmania!
Pat@Smalldog.com
As Small Dog's system administrator, I often get questions such as
"Why is my machine running so slow?" This seemed to be asked more
frequently right after we rolled out Tiger. The first round of issues
were resolved after Spotlight completed indexing the hard drive.
A few days later the performance issue reared its head again. I went
and looked at a few staffers' workstations, I found that they had
downloaded a ton of Widgets and had them all open. Widgets do not use
the CPU unless Dashboard is open, however they consume both real and
virtual memory at all times after you open Dashboard. When I ran
Activity Monitor, I found that all of the physical memory was being
utilized. Even with a GB of RAM, excessive widgeting can affect your
overall system performance. Closing nonessential widgets will release
memory, which will reduce the need for Virtual Memory. Closing open
widgets can be done two ways: Open Dashboard and Click on the X with
a circle around it on the bottom left corner. This will present a
small X with a circle around it on each widget; click the X to close
the widget. You can also hold down the option key and mouse over the
widget and the same close button. A small X with a circle around it
will appear that you can click on to close the widget.
After the initial fire was out, I surfed over to MacFixIt.com (I
suggest bookmarking this site if you don't have it set yet) to look
for suggestions on dealing with widgets. I found Widget Master. I
downloaded this software and was very impressed. I can enable or
disable widgets on the fly. I can even move widgets that are user
specific to the root level Widgets Library folder. By closing widgets
and using Widget Master to disable unnecessary widgets, I was able to
increase the performance of staffers' workstations while still
allowing access at the eye candy.
