Product Description:

File List is a batch file renamer, and a playlist generator.

Renaming
File List currently supports the following basic renaming routines: Find and replace (including support for regular expressions); Number sequentially; Change case; Set extension; Add prefix/suffix; Remove/insert characters. Moreover, File List's "Rename: Advanced" feature comes with its own name conversion description language (NCDL). Using NCDL, you can combine all of the abovementioned name conversions, plus a number of extra features such as conditional statements, (seemingly) nested counters, and more.

Generating Playlists
File List is capable of creating ASX/WAX/WVX, M3U, RAM, and SMIL (Audio/Video) playlists. You can also choose to package your media files along with a playlist in a so-called "playtainer".

One application → Many utilities
File Lists's "droplets" are proxy applications that store a given configuration. They make it ridiculously easy to use File List repeatedly for different, alternating purposes. And they even ssupport drag & drop!

What's new in this version:

  • You can now have the list of files update instead of being cleared after processing files. (Uncheck the "Clear list after processing files" checkbox in File List's "Processing" preferences.)
  • You can now configure File List to quit after processing files successfully. (Check the corresponding checkbox in File List's "Processing" preferences.)
  • New function for File List's Advanced Renaming: [truncate] returns a constant with (source expression) truncated to (maximum length) characters if (source expression) is longer than (maximum length). Returns the orginal (source expression) otherwise.
  • New function for File List's Advanced Renaming: [pad] returns a constant formed from (source expression) by either removing characters from the end, or by appending as many occurrences of (padding expression) as necessary.
  • File List no longer allows making files invisible by specifying a name that starts with a "." character. (Please contact me if you absolutely need this "feature".)
  • Reworded some preferences for better understanding.
  • Updated File List's documentation with a short paragraph on using back references in regular expressions.

I have tried most of the renaming apps available. Without a doubt Name Mangler does the job, does it well and quickly. Thanks to the developers for making it available as donation ware. If I continue to use it without problems a donation will be forthcoming. I highly recommend this little application. Excellent.

File List ReviewGreat free app - Version: 2.0, 11/15/2008 08:07PM PST

This has several things I like: the ability to change case, the option to preserve extensions, and a second chance to proceed or not proceed. Oh, and the price is great! The only free file name changer I found that can do what I need it to do.

File List ReviewApp won't display GUI, so I can't use app. - Version: 2.0, 6/29/2008 10:58AM PST

Can't view app's GUI. Activity Monitor shows that app is present. App icon shows in Dock. After I read a positive review in May '08 issue of Macworld, I downloaded freeware app to try. Would be worth paying for if I could get app to work. Have killed and restarted app many times. Haven't rebooted (out of principle) yet. Uninstalled app (w/ CleanApp) and then reinstalled a newly downloaded .dmg from developer's Website. Still no luck w/ GUI appearing. I'll give it one more try whenever I reboot the next time. Using Leopard 10.5.1 on PPC.
