Ethernal ReviewSTOP button still doesn't work; looks like new version - Version: 1.2, 11/30/2006 12:53AM PST

As was suggested, I deleted the prefs and sniffer in application support. I redownloaded the product and see it was last modified in October 2006! but regardless, the stop button still doesn't work for me.

I too had stop button problems. I think it happens if you have used the earlier version and upgraded. The cure is to quit Ethernal and find the preferences file
edu.usfca.jean.bovet.Ethernal.plist from
~/Library/Preferences/
and maybe the "Ethernal" Folder in "~/Library/Application Support/"

After deleting those and relaunch it works for me.

Sometimes the Search function misreports some simple searches on captured packets (for example 'xy') in that a packet is found displayed that does not in fact contain the string xy but deleting that search phrase then typing it in again finds no packets with that string.

Something useful to have would be to have a way to additionally resolve some addresses to my own local table of host names or colours which can be loaded on future captures, maybe displayed as a separate column.

However this is Application shows lots of promise. Keep up the good work.

Ethernal ReviewA variety of problems - Version: 1.2, 5/25/2005 05:43AM PST

Stop button still doesn't seem to work - I click it but packets keep coming in. Also frequent spinning beachballs on my 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 and it saves documents that don't open in Ethernal when double-clicked in the Finder and don't open when dragged onto Ethernal's icon - I have to go through the Open dialog. That's what I found in about 5 minutes of use. Needless to say, this would seem to need a ton of work.

Ethernal ReviewWorks quite well - Version: 1.1, 5/23/2005 02:20PM PST

Seems to do the job well, but as already noted here, the Stop button doesn't work. Also, it would be useful to have an option to see the source and destination addresses in other formats. MAC addresses aren't particularly user friendly. Would it be possible to see IP addresses and ports as an option?

Other than that, a nice clean tool. I particularly like the search feature.

Ethernal Troubleshooting Reportfew question... - Version: 1.1, 5/23/2005 02:13AM PST

first of all, thanks a lot for providing an ethereal-like utility...

and then the few question:
1) why the "stop" button doesn't stop capturing packet?
2) in the next version of the application will be provided some analisys tool for higher level protocol?

Ethereal is a great packet watching application. This version simply allows you to run it without using X11, which I have to say is a nice thing.

I rely heavily on Ethereal to troubleshoot network problems or test security software. It can also be fun to pop open in an internet cafe and watch people's IM chats. ;)

Ethernal CommentarySo what do I do with that information? - Version: 1.1, 5/22/2005 08:29AM PST

This must be a programmers type of application. At first I thought it was a "LittleSnitch" that would allow me to block incoming or outgoing packets.
