Product Description:

Different search engines use different methodologies to prioritize results. Because of this, the current "top four" search engines (Google, Teoma, Yahoo!, and MSN) all yield different ordering (and, in most instances, content) for their top-listed results. It would frequently be very useful to be able to conduct a search on all four engines "all at once", retrieve the results, and open them. Additionally, it would be desirable to eliminate any duplicates, and sort the remaining results according to the average of their individual search engine rankings: this is why MegaSearch was created.

This widget takes a search query, posts it to Google, Teoma, Yahoo!, and MSN, and collects the results in a NoteTaker notebook. Any duplicate results are eliminated; the remaining results are ordered as follows:
  • Results that show up in more than one search engine are grouped together according to how many search engines returned the result in question;
  • Within each group, results are sorted according to the average of their individual search engine rankings.
For all the search engines, only those links that correspond directly to search results are extracted (i.e., the ads, links to other parts of the search engine sites, etc., will not be included).

After this widget has finished, webpages may be loaded by hand one at a time, or all at once by running the "Load MegaSearch Pages" script within NoteTaker.

Notes:
  • A new NoteTaker notebook is created for each new search.
  • Since collecting all the results may take a while (depending upon the speed of your computer and your Internet connection), the notebook returns to the original search page at the end of the search to let you know the process is complete.
  • Ask.com (a.k.a. AskJeeves.com) is not included in the search engines, since it uses - and yields results identical to - the Teoma search engine.
  • Some duplicates may remain, due to the fact that not all search engines may refer to the same page in the same way. Thus, Google may return the URL for a given page as "http://www.mysite.com", while Yahoo! may list it as "http://mysite.com/index.html".

MegaSearch ReviewUnbelievably helpful research tool! - Version: 1.3, 8/30/2005 10:47AM PST

SGoodheart
This Widget is an incredible research tool! The first time I used it and it created a beautiful indexed, and sorted list of web page search results, all intelligently located in sections and pages that were tabbed, I had to laugh out loud, it was so amazing. And because NoteTaker itself is so amazing, the information is so *usable* (for example, all the links in the sorted lists are clickable, so you can web browse right within NoteTaker, which uses the same web engine as Safari.)

As a book editor who works on grade school science textbooks, I have come to rely heavily on NoteTaker as a way to organize all my text and image research. NoteTaker really is an incredible tool, and this wonderful widget is an amazingly powerful adjunct to it. If I could give this Widget six stars, I would! Check it out! If you don't have NoteTaker, download the demo and watch this Widget in action. The research power of this Widget combined with NoteTaker is simply amazing. Once you've used it, you won't want to be without it. Steve

MegaSearch ReviewA really useful tool for researchers and website tracking - Version: 1.2, 5/15/2005 02:24PM PST

I don't usually review products because I usually couldn't be bothered to take the time out, but I really was blown away with this widget and decided to break my trend...

As a writer and someone who conducts web research, this tool allows me to find the top results in a whole bunch of search engines. Then compiles it in one easy to read notebook. If only I had this when writing papers! Darn.

But also, it's helpful to track where my articles are placed and how my website is doing in the search engines for search terms. SInce it compiles it all in a handy interface for offline viewing I can quickly scan the document to track performance.

One thing that I couldn't have figured out on my own (I had to read the description within the Version Tracker information) was that you can archive all of the pages using the script "Load MegaSearch" it takes all the links and copies that specific page with graphics and layout and all. A very sweet feature for researching so you can read dozens of articles or websites from within one document in it's original formatting.

I would like to see more customization, such as the ability to use other search engines or display more results, etc. Of course, you might be able to do this, but I can't figure it out yet. Also, it'd be great to have other search engines (say highbeam.com or magportal.com or findarticles.com , etc)

I've used Notetaker for a while now, a year and a half or so, and I haven't even fully used all of the features, it's pretty scalable for my needs at least.

Overall, a very simple but powerful widget that taps into the power of NoteTaker. If you use NoteTaker, it's a useful tool. If you don't use NoteTaker, it's a good thing to check out if you do research or write articles, books or take a lot of notes.
