Product Description:

acSOUP is an offline reader for Usenet newsgroups and Internet e-mail. If you don't know what newsgroups are, you probably don't need this program. MacSOUP is primarily a newsreader, its e-mail capabilities are somewhat rudimentary compared to "real" e-mail clients.

What's new in this version:

  • When replying to a mail message that went to multiple recipients, MacSOUP now does a “reply-to-all” by default. There is no way to turn this off; in my experience this behaviour is almost always the desired one. In the few cases where it’s not, you have to edit the To: header manually.

There is one situation that requires special handling (and most other email clients get this wrong): when replying to a mailing list message, you normally don’t want to include the message’s author in the list of recipients of your reply, because most likely he is subscribed to the list and would get two copies of your reply that way. However, there’s no repliable way for MacSOUP to find out which addresses are mailing list addresses and which are personal mailboxes, so you have to tell it. To do this, use your favourite text editor to create a file “Mailing Lists” in the “Incoming Mail” folder of your MacSOUP database; in this file, list the addresses of the mailing lists that you are subscribed to, one on a line. Some day I might add a dialog in MacSOUP to configure this.
  • Printing is now supported on Mac OS X too. This has received little testing, I wouldn’t be suprised if there are bugs in this area.
  • There’s a new menu item (with keyboard shortcut) for switching personalities. On Classic Mac OS it simply goes to the next personality, wrapping around to the first at the end. On Mac OS X it pops up the personalities menu so that you can navigate it with the keyboard.
  • Fixed a lot of bugs, some of them serious.
  • A lot of minor user interface improvements.

MacSOUP ReviewA more fair review - Version: 2.5, 10/29/2003 06:26AM PST

Mikis--2008
The newsreader part is straightforward for any normal sane person (unlike the former reviewer) and contains all I need to follow technical discussions on Usenet. One have for instance the unique feature of graphical thread display and a nice if somewhat demanding Kill or Tag function.

I still haven't found any newsreader that can stand up to MacSOUP, whether on old Mac OS or in the Unix world, when it comes to saving my time and sanity.

The usenet section seems to be OK, nothing desirable, but quite confusing, rigid, a big mess with missing features and often nearly as strange as the author. Anyways, it is also called a mailer, and this section is entirely rubbish. This means under the scoreline, not worth the download.

MacSOUP ReviewI'll have to… - Version: 2.5b3, 7/24/2002 10:17PM PST

try the X version. I loved the old version. It's by far the best newsreader for following disscussions, but it's not ideal for downloading binary attachments. The multiple news server feature is not especially smooth either. I would love to see more AppleScript support so that I can automate archiving articles. Right now, scripts can't access the database nor dispose of articles.
