MacPorts CommentaryNot for beginners - Version: 1.7.1, 4/1/2009 04:34AM PST

It certainly isn't for beginners and amateurs, but it is very useful for people who need access to UNIX software. I stopped using Fink because it stopped working for me (I actually thought it had been discontinued). I have had no problems with MacPorts.

I believe that the last few comments are unfair. Although it is true that dependency problems exist for some ports and that the project is not as mature and reliable as, say, Debian's aptitude or maybe even Fink, it is an invaluable tool in many circumstances, especially for developers. It nearly always has up-to-date versions of its ports, whereas Fink (at least in the past – cannot judge because I do not use it now) had obsolete versions of many packages. It has packages that you would not find anywhere else (not even in Fink) and you would have to compile yourself if needed. The fact that it does not link to OS X's libraries but it needs to install its own has proved to be a plus, not a drawback, in my past experience: I can install the most recent releases of Boost libraries, Ruby, PHP, Perl, Apache, etc… without touching OS X. Even better, I can make MacPorts's versions coexist with OS X's ones. MacPorts, in my opinion, is the way to go for MySQL and PostgreSQL: all the other distributions I've seen lack some libraries or scatter things in folders like Library, Framework, etc… making it difficult sometimes to undo an installation. With MacPorts, with a simple command I'm done with all I need (including a launchd item to start and stop the server). And I *know* where all the files are. Finally, if I screw up MacPorts, as a last resort I may simply trash its folder and reinstall (never needed to to do that in the last two years). The few times I have had problems installing a package, a Google search has solved my problem.

Overall, MacPorts is not "to be avoided", it is "mostly needed" if you are developing on Mac OS X.

MacPorts Reviewthis is crap - Version: 1.6.0, 9/17/2008 01:16PM PST

It really doesn't work much like fink or BSD's Portage. Maybe it's supposed to, but it doesn't. So many packages are broken; dependencies fail to build for all kinds of reasons. A giant time waster. It's a shame some interesting software is offered and some software authors seem to rely on macports for their OS X releases.

I for one do not buy the BS about installing macports wholly seperate fomr OS X. This requires the installation of sometimes enormous amounts of redundant software and prevents the convenient use of macports to install things to complie other sources against the way one can, seemlessly, with fink. This is a nice idea very poorly done.

The installing process hangs, and they should not expect people to do a workaround.
They should withdraw it instead of letting people downloading it. Even if it's free.

When installing with Pacifist ( http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743 ), then the installation works fine.

Installing with OSXPM (the package manager from osxgnu.org) gives an error... strange!

Indeed, installing last version hangs... yet it is sufficient to force quit, restart, download Porticus and.. all is OK (1.67 PB with Leo).
do not be so rude with its author, indeed installer hangs indefinitely, but seems a non-critical issue, after restart all seems OK. Or am I wrong?

MacPorts ReviewDon't Install This from .pkg - Version: 1.6.0, 2/20/2008 12:00AM PST

The .pkg installer doesn't work properly and leaves you with an unusable installation.

I am now stuck because, despite uninstalling v 1.6.0, I can't now install any earlier version (which would work) and update.

This is a SERIOUS pain in the backside.

Once in a while I come by open sore software and there is no way to install it. It just gives you a folder full of folders that have strange stuff in it. I guess some use the X11 app to use. I have that but have no idea how to us it. I like using a computer, not making it work. I take it that this "application" here installs those apps or am I going to download this only to find that it's another open sore.
I don't want that disappointment and waste of time. I guess we'll never know.

I think I'll stay with applications that only need a double click to open.
