Product Description:

LiveQuartz is a simple and powerful free photo editor for Snow Leopard.
It is based on non destructive layers and lters.
The layers are at the left and the lters are at the right of the window.
To edit a photo, just drag it into the window (or layers' list) and it will be added as a new layer.
LiveQuartz handles Multi-Touch Trackpads.

The software is localized in 11 languages : English, Traditional Chinese, Simplied Chinese, Danish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Russian and Spanish.
LiveQuartz 1.7.3 will remain available on the website for Tiger users.

What's new in this version:

  • LiveQuartz 1.9 is a Snow Leopard only release. Older versions remain available on the web site.
  • Various Bug fixes and GrandCentralDispatch optimizations on Snow Leopard
  • Faster quit and better use of multiple CPUs
  • New Ã?«FlipÃ?» transformations added in geometry filter category (Horizontal and Vertical)
  • New Ã?«ShadowÃ?» filter added in stylize filter category
  • Better localization of filter parameters (with full explanation in the filter parameter panel)
  • Filters are represented in their order : top to bottom
  • Layer display offset bug resolved on transformed layers that have some filters
  • Pixel accurate image display and pixel accurate drawing when working precisely on pixels (except when using scale and rotation transformations or text)
  • Rewritten and fixed drawing tools
  • Rounded corner rectangle drawing tools
  • Ã?«Import from device...Ã?» added to import from scanners, digital cameras, iphones, etc...
  • Ã?«New from Clipboard...Ã?» menu added
  • New option on saving as flat image formats to keep alpha for the background or not
  • Window last position is saved
  • Pasting an image selection now pastes it at the same place as the original

The readme says it might not work on a MacBook. It doesn't. Too bad.

Central Scrutinizer--2008
This is a nice showcase of Core Image technology, but it needs adjustable histograms to serve as a full time photo editor. The GUI also needs some refinement.

As is, LiveQuartz is a curiosity.

While PhotoShop still rules everything and anything in the photo editing world, LiveQuartz is great for people who either can afford to pay for PhotoShop's high prices or just want to do some simple quick photo editing without having to dish out a lot of money for program functions they will probably never use. While LiveQuartz isn't as simple to use as PhotoShop and lacks functions, it still can preform many useful and simple tasks. For example, I use it crop photos with ease. Adding text or color is a breeze too. If you want to just play around with photos and not have to pay a lot to do it, get LiveQuartz.
