Product Description:

LiveQuartz is a simple and powerful free photo editor for Leopard.
It is based on non destructive layers and lters.
The layers are at the left and the lters are at the right of the window.
To edit a photo, just drag it into the window (or layers' list) and it will be added as a new layer.
LiveQuartz handles Multi-Touch Trackpads since 1.8.
You can watch a screencast of LiveQuartz in help menu or with this link: http://www.rhapsoft.com/?menu=livequartz_video

The software is localized in 10 languages : English, Traditional Chinese, Simplied Chinese, Danish, French, German, Italian, Persian, Russian and Spanish.
LiveQuartz 1.7.3 will remain available on the website for Tiger users.

What's new in this version:

  • New behaviour of drawing and gradient tools : By default, LiveQuartz is not creating a new layer each time you use the tool anymore (if you like the old behaviour, you can get it by typing this in the “terminal” application : “defaults write com.rhapsoft.livequartz IMDrawingWithoutMerging YES”).
  • LiveQuartz keeps the current selected tool after drawing.
  • With “shift” key pressed, rectangle and oval tools keep proportions 1:1. And with “shift” key pressed, the line tool steps 45°.
  • When choosing “Save as…” to a standard image file format, you can see a preview of final file size.
  • A file opening bug has been fixed (when there are empty layers)
  • A very old bug with display of “lasso” selection doing some pauses is fixed
  • “RHIF” Spotlight plug-in bug fix
  • 1.8.1 only for MacOS 10.5.3 because LQ has some hanging issues on PowerPC with 10.5.2

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC

Additional Requirements:

The readme says it might not work on a MacBook. It doesn't. Too bad.

Central Scrutinizer--2008
This is a nice showcase of Core Image technology, but it needs adjustable histograms to serve as a full time photo editor. The GUI also needs some refinement.

As is, LiveQuartz is a curiosity.

While PhotoShop still rules everything and anything in the photo editing world, LiveQuartz is great for people who either can afford to pay for PhotoShop's high prices or just want to do some simple quick photo editing without having to dish out a lot of money for program functions they will probably never use. While LiveQuartz isn't as simple to use as PhotoShop and lacks functions, it still can preform many useful and simple tasks. For example, I use it crop photos with ease. Adding text or color is a breeze too. If you want to just play around with photos and not have to pay a lot to do it, get LiveQuartz.
