Product Description:

Search for and view wikipedia articles from the dashboard. Complete with pictures, links to other articles, and external links.

Features:

  • Compatible with any language wikipedia, just enter the 2 (sometimes 3 or more) letter code on the back. Defaults to English.
  • Back and forward buttons with page caching. The cache life time is user-configurable on the back of the widget.
  • External links open in your preferred browser.
  • Click the 'wikipedia' button to the left of the search field to open the current article or search term in Safari.
  • The little '?' button to the left of the search field will pull a random article into the widget (Special:Randompage query).
  • Back and forward buttons with page caching.

See http://www.whatsinthehouse.com/widgets/ for a list of known bugs and to-do's.

What's new in this version:

  • Green, red and grey (along with the good 'ol blue) UI color selections.
  • Now collapses horizontally as well as vertically.
  • Individual widget instances remember their respective language settings, sizes and colors upon restart, and clean up the preference file when they're closed.
  • The update check is now only performed once upon loading, then no more often than once a day. You can opt-out of update checking altogether if you choose.
  • When you scroll down in an article, then open a new article or go back in the history, the widget will remember where you were scrolled to, so if you return to the article it'll be where you left off.
  • Localization compatible. (If you are willing to help out the project by translating a few strings of text into another language, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to those of you who have already helped out!)
  • Deutsch localization by Christian Wilke
  • Español localization by Christian Wilke
  • Français localization by Floréal Molina
  • Italiano localization by Marco Piccardo
  • Another new icon, courtesy of Chad W. again. Thanks Chad.
  • The 'cancel loading' behavior (click the progress indicator) has been fixed, I think. It was pretty flakey when you were 'back' in the history a couple articles, clicked a link, then cancelled the loading. A hover graphic has been added.
  • A couple scrolling-related bugfixes. Before, if you opened an article too short to fill the entire widget, and pressed the up/down arrows, or scrolled with the mousewheel, the content would jump from the top to the bottom of the viewing area. Also, if you scrolled to the bottom of a large article, then opened a small article, sometimes the small article would be displayed 'offscreen' until scrolling up.
  • The stretch animation has been smoothed out.
  • Other small bugfixes that have slipped my mind.

You will be surprised and delighted at how often wikipedia is just plain better than Google if you need to know something "right now". This is the widget that got me to start using Dashboard in my day to day workflow.

Wikipedia ReviewA Great Reference Tool, Well-Impmented in Widget Form - Version: 0.9.1, 10/27/2006 01:46PM PST

I'm so glad someone made this widget. Now that I have this in my Dashboard, I very rarely visit Wikipedia in my browser, except when editing entries. (Although you can edit within the widget, it's still a bit uncomfortable for me at such a small size.) Generally, my encyclopedia searches are for fairly quick information regarding questions I find in my usual Web searches, so keeping this in a nice little widget, separate from my regular Web browsing, is great. It's even more useful for my less computer-savvy relatives, who don't know what Wikipedia is. I've installed it on at least three other computers, and they're enjoying it too.

Fantastico.
