Product Description:

About Backpack
A completely new application, especially made for students and people who want to learn and practise words fast. With Backpack you can add words to a word list yourself and after that's done you can test these words, from original to translation or reversed. If you don't want to make a word list yourself, or you just want to practice even faster, why don't you just check out Backpack Share? With Backpack Share you can easily upload and download word lists. Whatever you want to practise, by using Backpack you can! What does Backpack offer you?
  • Easily add words to a word list. Of course you can change them afterwards, i.e: if there is a typo in it.
  • Save word lists and share them with your friends or co-students through Backpack Share.
  • Test yourself from original to translation or reversed. It's your choice, choose what you like most!
  • And much more!

What's new in this version:

New in Backpack 0.5.0:
  • The test-history shows now the number of good- and wrong answers, but also the average of those two.
  • You can add an existing wordlist to the wordlist that you have open.
  • You can convert files from '.oh4' and '.ohw' to a Backpack file.
  • You can automaticly add files to your library when you choose 'Save as...'.
  • When you are entering new words it's possible to change the character type, there are 2 options: Normal and Greek.
  • The library is extended with a 'Scan folder' function. With this function Backpack will scan a folder that you can choose for Backpack-files.
  • Are you dyslectic? No problem, because with Backpack you can choose to ignore mistakes that you made because of dyslexia. They simply don't count then.
  • The test function is extended with a 'Shuffle'-function. In this mode Backpack will ask you randomly original and tranlations.
  • Some words have more than one meaning. Now you can practice then in Backpack. You can add and test up to 5 originals and translations.
  • A bug fix for the 'Tab' key, everybody can use the tab key again.
  • Printing of a wordlist? No problem, just choose print from the menu and go.
  • Backpack is now fully Mac OS X 10.2 and higher compatible. When you download Backpack you will notice that it's at last a DMG file. Good for everybody.

This application has the workings of a gem. It's an excellent flashcard replacement. While many have tried, this one seems to have the ability to go the distance. Adding cards is easy, and the extra fields features (think itunes adding playlist criteria) make it very useful for things like foreign languages where a gender is critical to correct learning.

Having said that, the title of the application is somewhat appropriate. You have to select english in two drop down menus (so far, although there may be more). The translation is good, however the menus under file, such as services, are not localized. A global preference for the language would be one of the minimum fixes for interface.

While backpacking is a little rough on some things, I don't think it's beta by any means; unless you think everything is beta. This is a stable application with a few cosmetic/localization issues and it is extremely useful.

If there's a whole team working on this, they must be stupid. This app is not even near beta status. Interface needs a lot of work.
