After contacting the software supplier about the frequent shutdown problem I mentioned in a previous comment, I reconnected the microscope directly to one of the computer's USB ports (it had been connected to an unpowered USB hub). Performance improved greatly. I worked uninterruptedly for an hour. Now I'm not sure if the problems I had were due to me and not to the software. The software supplier earned my high esteem for the promptness and helpfulness of his response.
This microscope is a terrific 80 bucks' worth and I am grateful to EdH software for making it possible for me to use it with my Mac.

I downloaded this program and tried it ---- it worked fine for a few minutes, then quit. I paid my 12 dollars, received my confirmation of payment, and continued to try the program. It worked for a few minutes, then quit. On reopening the application, it worked fine for a few minutes, then quit again. It continues to do this. I have emailed the supplier for help.
It was the best thing I could have done. We discussed the issues and over an extended period of around 3 days he had sent me no fewer than 3 specially constructed versions of the software, including a debug version so that he could track the problem and find a workaround, even though we had both concluded that it was a hardware issue.
In the end we found a hardware resolution but my experience of the developer was that he was really sympathetic to my problems and extremely helpful, despite the problem coming from a hardware issue. I don't regret buying the software, which now works really well and has some really good features such as frame averaging to reduce noise. Money well spent in my humble opinion and Eric Hangstefer (the developer) is to be congratulated on a great application. Highly recommended without any reservations whatsoever. Thank you Eric.
