Product Description:

I hate pkg files on Mac OS X. I don't like how they can touch any part of the system they want. And many times the installer files are useless anyway; all they do is make sure an app is installed in /Applications, for example, which I can handle myself, thank you very much. So this utility simply unpacks all the files in a package into a folder in the same directory as the package. Very handy, and GNU GPL free too! NB: With many very system dependent pkgs, unpkg shouldn't be used, because it doesn't do any system related stuff, on purpose. But for simple applications (and even ones that just install extentions in places), unpkg should be fine.

What's new in this version:

  • now works with non-gzipped Archives -- thanks, Randall!
  • slight portability fixes -- should now work on other Unix-like OSes
  • minor other fixes and changes
  • build with the latest version of Platypus

unpkg Usage TipHow is this different than using the "Show Package Contents" option in the Finder? - Version: 2.0, 6/24/2006 06:33AM PST

ctrl-clicking on a ".pkg" file in the Finder will bring up a contextual with "Show Package Contents" as an option.

What does YOUR program, "unpkg", do that is different than the contextual-menu option "Show Package Contents?"

This utility is very handy given the "gotcha" bugs in Apple's Installer, which many people don't know that they need to work around when creating packages. Pacifist does more, but you can't beat the price of unpkg for the simple end of the functionality scale!
