Product Description:

FurthurNET is for bands that allow taping of their concerts, or maybe who don't allow taping per-se, but will allow people to trade what has been taped over the years. FurthurNET is not like Kazaa or Napster because it does not allow trading of studio albums or of the music of bands that do not allow their fans to collect their concert recordings. Furthurnet is not a way for people to steal music and bootleg official releases. It's a way for fans, most of whom are passionate about their music, to share whatever live recordings exist of their favorite bands. FurthurNET is one way to satisfy that interest and to ensure the preservation of whatever live concert recordings exist.

FurthurNET is completely non-profit venture. It was started by music fans and its run by and for music fans. FurthurNET is 100% free and no gain will ever be made by the FurthurNET staff from the application. It is a strictly non-commercial venture. Commercial and copyrighted material is strictly prohibited from the network, and this rule is actively enforced. By design, the network has built in security features to discourage and block out this "illegal" content. The FurthurNET administrative team and and the majority of the FurthurNET user base understands, accepts, and avidly supports the network's stance on commercial material, and all are active participants in policing the network to ensure that no one posts "illegal" content., and that such content is promptly removed.

What's new in this version:

  • Added an installation wizard to help first time users
  • Added font and color selection and other enhancements to chat, and fixed several display bugs
  • Fixed several bugs that prevented filesets from completing/sharing when the user upgrades to JRE 1.5
  • Changed the way that Furthur reports band-name only search results -- it will now report all active shares that match the search, even if the user hosting the files has no open slots (i.e., the download will not start immediately)
  • Improved the connection/disconnection code so that users won't appear as "ghosts," or be added incorrectly to the "peak uploaders" column as often
  • Fixed a bug that prevented Furthur from automatically reconnecting to the network if the user's Internet connection went dead
  • Revamped the help dialogs and error messages, added tooltips, and generally make the user interface more helpful
  • Re-arranged the preferences panel and added code to automatically find flac and metaflac, or to prompt the user to download the flac binaries, and added a check to prevent selecting FlacFrontend by mistake
  • Added column headings and other labels for using the client's features
  • Fixed the installer for Solaris users
  • Moved OS X menus to the client instead of on the system menu bar due to bugs with Apple's JRE that will hopefully be corrected by the next release
  • Got rid of DefaultHosts.txt

FurthurNet ReviewThis application ROCKS in more ways than one! - Version: 1.7.5, 4/15/2005 01:36PM PST

I've been using Furthur for about 3 years now and can say without reservation that this is the most useful and most-used application for me since the advent of OS X. With trade-friendly bands only, this is the one p2p music-trading application that is actually legal and ethical. It supports a wide variety of audio and video formats (yes video is supported, for video-trading-friendly bands). The list of "trade-friendly" bands might surprise you, check Furthur's list out at http://furthurnet.org/bandlist/

A vibrant and vital piece of Furthur is its community, a host of dedicated individuals who are ready to help out newcomers, resolve issues, and police the network's content to ensure that prohibited material doesn't compromise the integrity and legal status of the network. Interaction happens through the application's built-in chat client, and through Furthur's forum web pages. Numerous friendly folk are always around to answer questions and offer assistance.

This application just plain works, to put it simply. I have obtained hundreds of high-quality, legal concert recordings from Furthur, virtually hassle-free. So what if it's Java? It says what it does and does what it says. And, importantly, there is NO SPYWARE or advertising associated with it. This is about as "on the up and up" as you can get in this arena.

The only weakness that might possibly merit mention is the fact that when the logon server goes down the application will not launch, and that particular server has gone down for days at a time on more than one occasion. While these episodes are rare, server redundancy for this routine would be a welcome improvement. But, when everything's accomplished using volunteer equipment and time, it's hard to complain!

Furthur is, however, not for everyone. It is for people who respect the wishes of artists regarding the sharing of their live concert recordings. Those who wish to download or distribute material that is not explicitly trade-friendly should look elsewhere. Use of any part of Furthur to aid in such activities, including the chatroom, is strictly verboten.

More FREE and LEGAL music downloads than you can shake a stick at! What's not to love?
