Promising, but worrying developer silence - Version: 1.3.5, 7/26/2007 04:31AM PST

I tried this out last year, and even bought it because it was so nearly a great app. I've been waiting for the next version to solve certain glitches and polish a few of the slightly rough edges. Sadly, judging by the Picture Arena forum and lack of news, it look suspiciously as though there won't be a next version. A pity, as I expected to be able to use this to replace iView and iPhoto.

Hi everyone,
Experiencing some trouble with iPhoto and finding that it has not enough possibilities to edit pictures, I decided to go for Picture Arena.
But this doesn't work at all. First, it recreates a thumbnails database each time it launches. So with an iPhoto Libray holding 2750 photos, it takes a while to load the whole thing. Besides, it happens to show all the photos upside down… No kidding : everything has to be rotated to be seen ! Unbelivable, but true
Then, if I try to edit a picture, it crashes most of the time…
And it misses an important feature : you can crop images, but you can only do that by "hand". I think the developers should implement a feature where you can choose to crop it to a specified scale to be able to print directly to 4X6 papers, without margin.
And even with that feature, I doubt Picture Arena would be useful, because it seems to be completely incompatible with shared networked printers. If I try to change the printer I want to print to, almost all menus are greyed out and I can't even quit Picture Arena (except with a Force Quit) !
Definitely not convincing here. Sorry…
Regards.

Official from the dev site:
"At this point no plans for future Picture Arena updates exist due to the lack of sufficient demand and a strongly changed market situation. [29/12/2007]"
After letting its users wait for almost two year for a universal binaries update the dev just let them down.
No more update for ACD See, PhotogridX and now picture arena.... and no potential replacement for those apps under MacOS X.
The Mac is now without a solid picture browser (don't speak to me about iPhoto, Aperture, lightroom or any of the database driven app that tells you how and where to store your photos...)
