AOL Service Assistant CommentaryExporting to Mail - Version: 1.0, 1/28/2008 12:00AM PST

pendragon
I am presently using Mail as my AOL email client.

1. Can I still use AOL Service Assistant to import old files from my AOL Filing Cabinet without starting over, e.g, can I do a custom install/migrate of just the Filing Cabinets?

2. When the AOL Address book is imported, and it sees the same name in Apple’s Address Book, does it totally ignore the Apple Address Book entry or will it import data that is still in AOL address Book, but is not Apple’s Address Book?

AOL Service Assistant ReviewRecovers corrupted filing cabinets !!! - Version: 1.35, 4/20/2006 01:43PM PST

I was rearranging mail in AOL (I had >7,000 emails) and the program crashed multiple times. The filing cabinet was always buggy. It showed different numbers of emails in a folder depending on how you sorted the list (by date showed the most, by email address showed less than half). Finally that filing cabinet wouldn't work at all and the program wouldn't even open.
After reinstalling the latest version, saving a copy of the old filing cabinet and moving it out of the AOL folder, AOL would finally work. After much discussion, I was told by a AOL support techie and his supervisor that there was no way to recover that mail from a corrupted database and that I should have been making backups. Well I do backup regularly but I overlooked the email databases for AOL which are stored in users/shared/AOL/ not in a typical folder that one would backup (like your OWN user folder).
The AOL service assistant did it's thing and recovered all my email except one that contained some corrupted data. It even told me the title and sender of the email. I could tell it was non-essential.
HOORAY! AOL Service Assistant saved the day. I had to call AOL back and let them know about the software available on their own website and what it was capable of doing.

Yeah that's just what I want. More AOL on my mac. NO! Why don't they worry about updating their regular software so mac users have all the features that PC users have, seeing as how we pay the same as they do. I mean, they're only, what, about 4 or 5 years behind, right? When was OSX released? They need to put a tag under all those tv commercials that says "Except for mac users."

No, I'm not bitter at all.

AOL Service Assistant CommentaryCan I use this to convert my old AOL Filing Cabinet? - Version: 1.34, 4/7/2005 04:41PM PST

I have an old Filing Cabinet file from back in the bad old days when I was an AOL user. Can I use this tool to export my old AOL correspondance to .Mail - even though I'm not longer an AOL subscriber? Or does anybody know of a Mac tool to convert the AOL Filing Cabinet to a regular mail app? Thanks!

This version (1.26) has timed out. It does not launch, but instead, presents a dialog box stating it's expired.

Good Job AOL, allow people to get off your system. These tools are much too late by about 4 years for me to have a use for them but better late than never, right?

AOL Service Assistant CommentaryAddress book does not work - Version: 1.26, 3/21/2005 09:45AM PST

stangilbert
This will NOT transfer your contacts into your address book on the mac. This is based on email addresses automatically entered into the aol contacts without formal names... I think this app probably creates an LDIF file for transfering the contacts but without critical fields (like a name) address book sees "multiple records" that appear the same and won't import them.

Too bad... this would be a prized feature as so many people are trying to get off of AOL and migrate to the mac... but can't import things like their address book!

i'd rather america online work on bringing aol x up to speed with the win version feature set, because aol x is like 3 generations behind.
