Product Description:

Piano Tuner is a 12-note chromatic scale strobe tuner application that utilizes sound input devices such as built-in microphone, line in, and iSight.

Strobe tuners are extremely accurate compare to regular tuners with a needle or LEDs. The slightest difference between the actual pitch and the ideal pitch accumulates over time and appears as a movement on the strobe tuning meter.

Piano Tuner can be used by someone who wants to learn how to tune a piano by using a tuning lever and also be used by a professional piano tuner to help the tuning process.

  • Tuning: 12-note chromatic scale.
  • Temperaments: Customizable (±50). Supports Scala Scale (.scl) files.
  • Stretch: Customizable (±50).
  • Meters: strobe, cent, and hertz.
  • Range: 9 octaves. C0 (16.352Hz) - B8 (7902.133Hz).
  • Accuracy: ±0.1 cent with the cent readout. ±0.1 cent @ 440Hz with the strobe tuning meter.
  • Calibration: 349.000 - 499.999Hz (0.001Hz steps).

NOTE: A piano requires tuning, voicing, and regulation at least once a year by a professional piano tuner in order to keep it in a good condition.

CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TUNE YOUR PIANO WITHOUT LEARNING HOW. IT CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS.

Piano Tuner CommentaryGood helper - Version: 1.9, 3/18/2007 09:42AM PST

fablau
I have a Yamaha baby grand that needed a full tuning every 4 months, so every time I had to pay $90-100 to have a professional tuner tuning my piano (so spending a minimum of $300 a year). After one year, I got sick (too much money!), so I bought a good piano lever, miscellaneous material to tune the piano and tried this little program. Well, I am a professional violinist so my hear is very good to understand if a note is high or low, but sometimes I get confused and this little program helps me to understand right that.

Now I am keeping my piano tuned by adjusting those single notes every two weeks and it's great.

Be careful though! To tune a piano is not so easy and immediate, you must be a good musician first (to know the 5th basic tuning), have a good hear and be careful to turn your string pins VERY slowly.

If $99 is out of your budget, and you don't need a specialized piano tuner, try Strobe Tuner (currently 1.0.2) from the same developer, Katsura. $10 shareware.
