UK.keylayout ReviewMac's keyboard is standard - Version: 050306, 1/13/2007 07:41AM PST

No criticism of the product intended but what this does is create a non-standard keyboard - that used by PCs in the UK. The way Macs keyboards are is normal. Its PCs in the UK that are odd.

UK.keylayout Troubleshooting ReportTiger keeps changing back - Version: 050306, 8/24/2006 02:09AM PST

Excellent piece of software, enabled me to use my old PC keyboard on the Mac, something Apple have never offered any solution for despite the simplicity and utility.

One problem, (possibly since a recent auto-update) the keyboard layout doesn't stay configured! After setting it, a couple of minutes later Tiger decides to go back to the US keyboard layout. Thanks a lot Apple! Don't think you will force me to pay out good money for one of your stinking keyboards yet!

UK.keylayout ReviewGreat for the UK! - Version: 050306, 4/21/2005 10:57AM PST

Super - exactly what I was looking for. All you new Mac Mini people hooking up to a UK PC keyboard will find this little file makes life much, much easier!

It soon makes you realise how many times you type in your email address, so those keys being in the 'right' place (i.e. not with the '2' key!) for a UK PC user are very necessary. Now, if you could do a version that sorts out the Ctrl-End and Ctrl-Home - or swaps the Windows (Option) key with the Control key, I would be typing this far quicker!! ;-)

Instructions for a Mac newbie were easy to follow. So highly recommended! Thanks.

UK.keylayout CommentaryNot complaining - Version: 050218, 2/20/2005 07:33AM PST

Please don't think I'm complaining, as you point out there is obviously a need for this.

However out of curiosity I looked at all the keyboards at work and of 10 Windows (a real mix of brands), 4 UNIX and 4 Macs only one didn't have a '@' at shift+2 and that was a German layout keyboard on a Mac. I don't work in the UK.

I will sut up now because I'm not really adding anything useful to Mr. Sephton's work, thanks for the effort though.

UK.keylayout Developer NoteWho is this keylayout meant for? - Version: 050218, 2/19/2005 06:28AM PST

msephton
To recap, this is meant for UK computer users who have used keyboards where Shift+2 gives them " - probably UK PC switchers.

I've used keyboards like this from my first computer: the Acorn Electron, C64, my old Atari ST, home built PC and even the keyboard for my set top TV digibox. So the Apple layout is a bit cumbersome. Have a look for yourselves here: http://computermuseum.50megs.com/collection.htm

Of course, I know there will be users that this is of completley no use to.

UK.keylayout Commentaryigamogam - not a representive sample - Version: 050218, 2/18/2005 04:22PM PST

You're not looking at a representative example of PC keyboards. I have a Belkin wireless UK spec (i.e. shift-3 is a pound sign) keyboard and shift-2 on that is a double quote whilst shift-' is an @ sign. Because Belkin don't provide a Mac compatible key map for their keyboard I've had to resort to using a piece of software from Logitech to make the keyboard usable on my Mac. So I think this piece of software has a definite use.

Thanks for doing the work, freeware and obviously you have spent time on this but I am confused, I own three keyboards and they all have the key Shift+2 set as a '@' one is on my PB (bought in UK) the other two are windows specific (+ not from UK) and one is even Arabic layout. I'm puzzled? I have to look at more keyboards obviously.
