rhunUsing it on a new MBP 15 2.66 with Snow 10.6.2 there are more options which gives you a better way to keep your Mac running quick & clean.
MM runs the Crons jobs on demand, cleans caches, repair permissions plus many other helpful ideas.
Every week after running MainMenu my Mac feels snappier.

nippithonSantas made it clear that MainMenu wasn't going to be free forever. I don't expect anyone to work for me for free. Nor do I want anyone to work for me for free.
I am grateful to the new developer for buying MainMenu and keeping it in development.

ActionAmerica.orgConsidering that is is nothing more than a one-stop interface for things that are already a part of OS-X, those earlier versions were priced appropriately, as Freeware. But, with version 2.0, that appropriate value ended, with a loud crash. They suddenly raised the price to an absurd $20, but added only a couple of new features that, like most of the rest of the features, are easily accomplished in only a few clicks in the OS. Huh???
After all, all that it does, in most cases, is save the user a few mouse clicks. In those other few cases, the alternative to a menu item might require the user to enter a single line command in the Terminal (which, incidentally, can be easily accomplished in Automator). In every case the functionality is already part of OS-X. All that they have done is to put a cute interface on those existing features. As a point in fact, that's pretty much what Automator does.
Though MainMenu is far from being a great application (in fact, it's not an application, but rather, an interface to Apple applications), those earlier versions could save a little time and so, were worth the effort to download. It was a great Free interface. But, considering that the average user could, with little effort, create a folder with a group of Automator scripts, to do the same things, those earlier versions were priced right.
There are several FREE apps out there that do everything that MainMenu does, albeit with different interfaces. In fact, most people will probably consider some of the other interfaces to be far superior, since those others don't take up space on the menu bar. I personally never had a reason, to go looking for anything else, since I only ran MainMenu when I needed it and Quit it, immediately afterwards, saving the menu bar space for really useful items.
Note to MainMenu developers: GET OVER YOURSELVES! IT'S AN INTERFACE FOR EXISTING FUNCTIONALITY; NOT A STAND-ALONE APPLICATION!
As for me, I still have the earlier version of MainMenu backed up on my Time Capsule, so I may just go back to that one. OTOH, I may decide that I prefer the interface on one of those other similar, but free tools that I found, before posting this review. Either way, I refuse to pay $20 for something that does what I can do in Automator or AppleScript, without a whole lot of effort and is already available at no cost, elsewhere.
Get Cache Out X and PseudoAnacron instead

If it wasn't broken ... - Version: 2.0.0, 7/16/2009 01:38AM PST

DrLeonPNow, with some minor changes, the developer is charging $20. As if that is not bad enough, you get nagged to register. And, I have got a message saying that "the security of MainMenu has been breached" and I need to download and install a new copy. In the span of 4 days, I have had this problem 3 times! This is ridiculous. I am permanently uninstalling this piece of s***.
PS The best way to run the cron scripts is to have the free PseudoAnacron set to open at login.

MAINMENU ''2.0'' = SHAMELESS CASH-GRAB! USE APPLEJACK FOR FREE!

summerstormpicturesWe (and by ''we'' I mean the ''disgruntled'') are upset that this wonderful, ''working just fine thank you'' utility was snatched up by someone, slapped with a coat of paint and shoved out the door as 2.0, along with a $20 price tag.
Honestly, MainMenu was a really wonderful and useful little utility for what it was. It allowed some degree of safety in performing system tasks that probably should be performed at the super-user level ala reboot using the best all-around hands-down utility there is for this, AppleJack--but MainMenu allowed some quick and simple things like purging your DNS and permissions repair--but everything else is available anywhere else and for free.
I urge those who think ''we'' are being ''disgrunteld'' to take a look at another utility available on VersionTracker this new company snatched up called SlidePad. The difference between MainMenu and SlidePad is totally different as MainMenu was genuinely a useful and novel utility (before it was ''repainted''). SlidePad on the other hand was a brutally shameless rip-off of a totally free utility called sideNote, which has been around for years and has been free--and is still actively maintained by the original developer.
There is nothing in the ''new and improved'' MainMenu that warrants charging $20. I can buy a can of paint and repaint myself, because that's really all this ''upgrade'' amounts to.
So what seems to be the trend here? Why would the same company who played the shareware-freeware shell game with MainMenu snatch up something as disreputable as SlidePad?
Decide for yourself if you want to throw away good money (and way too much of it) at a cosmetic makeover. Then find AppleJack here on VersionTracker and find out just how free and much more thorough (not to mention safe) it is.
And--just for some cozy nostalgia, keep the ''old'' MainMenu running for free too. It may disappear from VersionTracker, but I'm sure folks like me still have it somewhere and can make it available to interested parties.

wapatah2dabammieAlso, a bit off topic, but does Versiontracker have a public developer blacklist a la Macupdate for devs that post positive reviews of their own software? Cause there's a whole lot more people coming here to defend the price increase...

Nick PillIt has a great feature for running batch tasks which is a real time saver.
I don't understand people complaining that MainMenu is shareware now. Why do you always want apps free? Do you know how much time you need to make such a great App?
