Product Description:

Wx is a specialized internet weather station app for Mac OS X that downloads and processes weather information and forecasts. The software links to free XML and WML data on the internet from the US National Weather Service, and presents it in an attractive user-friendly interface. Wx can be configured to track weather conditions, live RADAR, and forecast information for five locations, and it can download up to five weather maps or images. The information can be downloaded manually, or the software can be configured to download the information automatically, on a periodic basis. Current weather conditions are summarized in the app's dock icon and dock menu. An optional data logging feature records weather information to text files.

What's new in this version:

Version 2.1 incorporates the following changes:
  • tracking of five locations, up from three

  • separate RADAR window with larger size and improved functionality
  • RADAR caching for improved performance when checking RADAR frequently
  • added probability of precipitation to graphical forecasts
  • full window transparency in 10.3.9 and 10.4
  • chime on/off option
  • can use command-r on keyboard to activate "reload"
  • ability to change window color and transparency

Wx CommentaryCan't keep it working on my new 13" MacBook Pro - Version: 5.3.5, 7/12/2009 09:03PM PST

The author responded quickly to my inquiry and I found out that I can't include Wx in my "Login" items as it won't run well. Now when I start it up manually some of the time it won't provide a forecast. Tonight for example I'm getting "Wx Error: the NDFD server did not return valid point forecast data: Requested 7 days but received 0 days".

Wx is very pretty but I want something that just works all the time. I've used WeatherDock for about a year and while it's not quite as pretty as Wx, it is very reliable.

Wx Usage TipMuch improved - Version: 5.3, 9/15/2008 10:35AM PST

In contrast to my grumpy review a year ago this versions seems to work very well
and is very pretty
the radar map downloaded instantly and changing location procedure is now effortless
however
unless one needs the 7 day history or one of the neat automated features such as
"sound an alarm, send e-mails or SMS text messages, or run an AppleScript when severe weather alerts are issued by the NWS"

all the basic information is available for free (as the author notes) at

http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=cbx&product=N0R&loop=yes
and
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?site=BOI&llon=-116.606247&rlon=-114.923747&tlat=44.002084&blat=42.322084&smap=1&mp=0&map.x=61&map.y=59

The urls above are specific to Boise but easily be changed
Suggest the author add a link to "http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/full_loop.php" where one gets a nice live weather map of the entire country

from the entire country map a click on your location brings up the local radar and a link to the forecast page

Haven't had time to check out the new features, but it certainly is noticeable faster. Just in time for Hurricane Ike here in Houston...
