Wx CommentaryCan't keep it working on my new 13" MacBook Pro - Version: 5.3.5, 7/12/2009 09:03PM PST

The author responded quickly to my inquiry and I found out that I can't include Wx in my "Login" items as it won't run well. Now when I start it up manually some of the time it won't provide a forecast. Tonight for example I'm getting "Wx Error: the NDFD server did not return valid point forecast data: Requested 7 days but received 0 days".

Wx is very pretty but I want something that just works all the time. I've used WeatherDock for about a year and while it's not quite as pretty as Wx, it is very reliable.

Wx Usage TipMuch improved - Version: 5.3, 9/15/2008 10:35AM PST

In contrast to my grumpy review a year ago this versions seems to work very well
and is very pretty
the radar map downloaded instantly and changing location procedure is now effortless
however
unless one needs the 7 day history or one of the neat automated features such as
"sound an alarm, send e-mails or SMS text messages, or run an AppleScript when severe weather alerts are issued by the NWS"

all the basic information is available for free (as the author notes) at

http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=cbx&product=N0R&loop=yes
and
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?site=BOI&llon=-116.606247&rlon=-114.923747&tlat=44.002084&blat=42.322084&smap=1&mp=0&map.x=61&map.y=59

The urls above are specific to Boise but easily be changed
Suggest the author add a link to "http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/full_loop.php" where one gets a nice live weather map of the entire country

from the entire country map a click on your location brings up the local radar and a link to the forecast page

Haven't had time to check out the new features, but it certainly is noticeable faster. Just in time for Hurricane Ike here in Houston...

Wx ReviewGreat Job! - Version: 5.16, 12/31/2007 02:53PM PST

I love this program! The support from the author is excellent. As a pilot I have all my localities loaded, prognostic charts, and other useful flight information. Allows for METARs, TAFs and upper wind currents as well. All this in one program. Use it with Leopards spaces and have the weather at the push of a button. Great support. Needs a travel/flight planner and it'll be the only weather program you'll need. I wrote the same program with Applescript, but WX has a lot more to offer. Even works with the iPhone.

Wx CommentaryMy favorite weather app - Version: 5.15, 11/20/2007 10:17PM PST

Central Scrutinizer--2008
I've tried at least a dozen, and this is my favorite weather app. It has a gorgeous interface and really packs a lot of info into a small area.

Alternatively, I can click on the link in my dock and load a custom www.wunderground.com page in Safari, which has, at only a click or two away, more weather and radar info than Wx can shake a stick at. It's not as pretty as Wx, and the information isn't displayed quite as efficiently as in Wx, but it loads just as fast and Safari is rock solid and always updated to work with the latest OS X release.

All else being equal, I'd probably opt for Wx, but all else is about $17 in Safari's favor. Wx is a wonderful app, but IMO it's trying to fill a niche that isn't there.

Wx Troubleshooting Reportradar map is broken - Version: 5.1, 9/17/2007 12:45PM PST

looks like a fairly nice integrated weather pgm, the detailed 7 day forecast is nice have not seen that on others

in my case the NWS radar display does not load (says loading but nothing shows)

I prefer Seasonality which is similar and which also includes a real time satellite photo and a extended detail history of all the measured parameters (but radar is not real time but does update every few minutes )

The real time radar is not really integrated on Wx it just provides a link which you can do by yourself anyway

There are many weather programs available for the Mac, some that display in your menubar (e.g., weatherpop and weathermenu). Wx is a gorgeous program, and especially welcome to me, is the fact that it doesn't appropriate vast amounts of cpu -- it seems a very well-behaved and good citizen. It's loaded with little gems of artful implementation that very much bespeak that this program is a labor of love. I love it, too!

I like this app, it doesn't have a smoth feel, as I would like. But I like it. Remove blank tabs is all I can suggest.

Wx ReviewMy Favorite Weather App - Version: 3.43, 6/20/2006 04:42AM PST

Wx became my default weather app from the day I first downloaded it and the developer has continued to improve it since then. I like the information displayed in the main screen for your selected location and the fact you can add customized information or maps for each location. Allowing for multiple locations in separate tabs means I can have the weather for those places I frequently travel to immediately available. You can also change the default maps displayed in the Maps tab. Speaking of your location, you can enter the coordinates of your house rather than using a default latitude and longitude for your city. The Live Radar console has seen major enhancements since the first version I had and the Ridge Console has several options that let you change what you are seeing or to move to a different nws radar site. Documentation is provided on a web page rather than in a help file and was sufficient to answer what questions i had when initially setting Wx up. I have not had to refer to the Help since then. The developer is quick to respond to queries and encourages feedback and suggestions and I have seen feature suggestions end up in updates. The trickiest part, especially at first, is customizing additional information for a location on the "Add-ons" page. Everything for one location has to be entered on one line and this means scrolling back and forth to edit or make changes. I have taken to copying the string into TextEdit, making my changes, and pasting it back into Wx. I had forgotten that Wx was only $10.00 - it is well worth this shareware fee, especially as then you can save all your customizations.
