Product Description:

WeatherNow communicates with a serial-equipped Vantage Pro weather console. Other Davis weather consoles should work too but have not been tested. It will show temperature, humidity, wind speed, etc, on-screen but its most useful feature is that it is AppleScript enabled.

Using AppleScript you can get current weather data in to any program you want - as long as it is AppleScriptable too. All the same weather data that is available through the main application window is available via AppleScript.

What's new in this version:

  1. First preview version
  2. Can read all the main information off of a Davis Vantage Pro console
  3. Tested with a Vantage Pro but should work with other Davis products, including the new Vantage Pro 2
  4. Stress tests passed, the app held 5 years worth of data without excessive memory or processor utilization
  5. AppleScript support works, with a dictionary to help see what command are available. None of the individual parameters will be removed before release, but some extras may be added.
  6. This preview release will give back accurate data for the following specific applescript requests:
    • Insde Temperature
    • Outside Temperature
    • Time the data was recorded
    • Calculated sunrise
    • Barometric pressure
    • Wind direction
    • Day's rainfall
  7. All other AppleScript queries just return back a '1'
  8. Settings don't get saved, so you have to reset the port and timer settings when you relaunch the app
  9. Export of recorded data doesn't work
    • This app does not interfere with data recorded by the Davis data-logger
    • If you quit this app and launch the WeatherLink software you will be able to download and save the data as usual
    • Only one application can be communicating with the device at a time

Operating System Requirements:

I've been using Weather Now for a couple of months with a minimum of fuss in terms of initial setup and use. I did have two issues, but the developer has been extremely responsive in responding to my emails and fixing the problems. All in all, not a bad option (in terms of cost) for getting my Vantage II Pro weather information uploaded to one of the online weather sites. I'm also using the Apple-scripting capability to import the weather information into a home automation program which was also straightforward.

I can recommend this program.

Ratings: It may not have all the wiz-bang display features of some other more costly options, but it provides (and provides it well) the two main features that I wanted (uploading and Applescript).

Weather Now Usage TipIf you encounter a problem... - Version: 1.4, 6/13/2005 07:33PM PST

If you encounter a problem please check back to see if there are any follow up questions that will help solve the issue.

I've looked at the code to make sure I didn't accidently comment part out, but the code to catch if you don't have a recognized serial port is still there, and the code to catch if you don't have a recognized weather station connected is still there. So, to solve the problem I will need some assistance from those being hit by them...
