Thank you to the Automat crew! I downloaded this synth only yesterday and have spent hours already getting into its spare, powerful interface. Wow.
First thing to note is that for me, it did not hold together very well in Live 7. Only one preset would run at a time, and to try to load more than one, or to add another Live instrument, led to repeated crashes.
But...
In Logic 8, Automat is simply my new favorite synth. Serious sound-making capacity hides behind the spare, ultra-light format. This morning I dialed up a bass sitar with FM overtones that sounded wildly acoustic. Compared to the ES-2, which I really like, Automat seems to be a far more serious, simpler instrument to use. Drop the fancy UI and go with pure functionality -- dig it!
This thing is strangely alive, Live or no Live. I love it.

This is one of the deepest, intelligently architected and inspiring free plug-in synths to be developed in a long while. If you have a penchant for deep architecture, options, crazy modulation routings and loop-able envelopes - then look no further. Incredible. Oh - and it SOUNDS stunning. My hat's off to these fine programmers. It's so good I sent them money.

... make it work?
There is nothing which could be run like an .app. So how does it work?

Um, in regards to the previous comment: "All sounds sound the same, absolutely no character". ARE YOU HIGH???!?!? I've created patches with Automat 3.9 that come VERY close in sound to my Prophet-600 and Jupiter-6. It all comes down to how you program it. The LP filter is simply INCREDIBLE and has 98% the depth, meat, fizzy-ness, etc. of a real analog if you program it correctly. Automat is capable of producing the best Sequential Circuits filter emulation I've ever heard in a softsynth. Sure it's easy to get sterile, lame patches, just like on any analog. Don't judge any synth on its presets, get in there and see how flexible and fat this thing really is.
Nice Freebie

Pros: it's free! Modulation all over the place, not terribly CPU intensive. Cons: All sounds sound the same, absolutely no character, not as cool as Buzzer 2 yet. But it's free!

Although it sounds the same I prefer the Generator GUI. If this is a development on Generator is there any way of converting old Generator presets to work in Automat?

Just got Generator version 0.1.1 a few days ago, unfortuantely it didn't pass the AU validation in Logic Pro7 , so i wrote Stiwi (the developer):
The next day he had fixed the problem! :-)
Thank you Stiwi; keep up the good work :-)
