Product Description:

Mail Type Select, née Type Ahead Find, brings the same kind of keyboard navigation to Mail.app's message list that the Finder has in its list view (or icon view, or column view really). If you type a short sequence of characters while the table of messages has keyboard focus (basically, when that window is in front), a message matching your typing will be selected. It's much faster than using the mouse or arrow keys, and becomes completely second nature after a little bit of use.

To install:
  • Download the bundle.
  • Quit Mail.app
  • If it doesn't already exist, create a folder named Bundles in /Library/Mail/.
  • Copy MailTypeSelect.mailbundle into that Bundles folder.
  • In Terminal.app, type defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles YES and hit return. The defaults command is only available if the BSD subsystem package is installed (which it is in a default install).
  • Still in Terminal, type defaults write com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion 1 and hit return.
The plugin should now be installed. Relaunch Mail.app and try typing while the message viewer window (that's the mailbox window) is in front. If Mail beeps then the plugin is not loaded properly.

I like it. Note that the current version, at least, can be installed into the users ~/Mail/Bundles/ folder. It doesn't have to be in /Library/Mail/Bundles/ folder as was mentioned below. Also if you have any other Mail bundles installed already then you don't need to do the terminal stuff to get this working.

Mail Type Select Developer NoteExplanation - Version: 2.4, 2/2/2005 09:01PM PST

I'm the developer for this plugin, and I did not know until today that it was posted to versiontracker. I intentionally did not post it because I did not want to do the level of tech support that having it posted entails, and because it is not ready for prime time. There is no installer. There is no icon.

Furthermore, whoever posted this did not copy the installation instructions correctly. I suppose I'll leave it up for now, but the previous poster is correct: This plugin is most appropriate for power users for now.

Thanks! I installed the new version in /Library/Mail/Bundles again and went through the gubbins required in Terminal and hey presto!- it all works.

In fact it works very well and as the earlier post comments, very natural.

Great Idea, I imagine installing it is a little daunting if you don't like using Terminal.

Can I just comment in what I hope is a constructive way, that if you could make a installer it would be a great help for non UNIX folk or at least make it clear that you don't use the Mail folder in the individual User's Library folder.

Cheers
