Drive Genius CommentaryDefrag crashes thanks to gratuitous graphics, trashes disk - Version: 2.2.1, 11/15/2009 03:23PM PST

Used DG 2.2.1 yesterday to try to defragment a disk under Snow Leopard so Boot Camp could partition it for a Windows installation. The defragment option ran for about 3 minutes before crashing in the code that draws the ridiculously gratuitous graphics of the spinning disk, flying 1's and 0's, and so on. Naturally, being interrupted in the process of shuffling data around didn't lead to a happy result. Fortunately I wasn't willing to run this program without a complete backup, so I was able to recover the disk. I've never had any defragment issues with Drive Genius 1.5.3 (no gratuitous graphics) despite frequent use. Felt like an idiot for telling someone I had a great program that would let us skip the backup/restore method of disk defragmentation! I'll be sure to turn off the animation next time, if there is a next time.

Prosoft staff: don't ask me to contact you -- go flog the engineer that did the buggy disk drive animation, and the marketing weenie who insisted on putting it in the product!

Drive Genius Troubleshooting ReportDefrag quits !!! - Version: 2.2.1, 10/27/2009 05:41PM PST

Moonwatcher
This version quits on me while using defrag, happened a few times using different Macs.
I don't know if it's because I'm now running Snow Leopard, or this version of DG, but older versions, running on Leopard and Tiger, NEVER happens !! Strange, but luckily so far I have not lost any data. The app just quits "unexpected", but using Disk Utility I can mount the drive.
Any suggestions ??

Drive Genius ReviewHard drive collapse - Version: 2.2, 8/22/2009 03:05PM PST

Attempting an upgrade to OS 10..5.8 on a G4 Powerbook, software update reported a lack of space. I therefore set Drive Genius to look for unwanted localisations and unneeded universal binaries and cache and temporary files and went to bed. The next morning the drive was dead and proved irrecoverable by Disk Utility and Disk Warrior which could not even see the Partition. I can only presume that DG drove the hard drive into the ground with its scanning. This was not a new machine but the HD failure at this time was too much of coincidence for me. A most unfortunate and expensive outcome from the first attempt at using this costly software. I would not recommend.

Drive Genius ReviewCatastrophic Defrag Fail - Version: 2.2, 8/17/2009 04:56PM PST

Paid for upgrade to version 2.2.

Attempted to defrag Leopard partition, failed within five seconds.

This catastrophically damaged the B-Tree, and corrupted the Partition Table. Neither Drive Genius nor Apple's Disk Utility could then see the partition in question. Thus, Drive Genius could not repair what it had broken.

My old version of DiskWarrior was able to find the partition (now labelled only as "Unknown"). It had to recover files by manually scanning the partition and recreating them. The original file structure was lost. The operating system install was ruined, and a reinstall failed. (The hard drive itself is fine, SMART verified, passes all tests. Never an issue with it.)

I was attempting to do maintenance to clean up my system prior to starting a new job. Now I have to reconstruct a relatively complex install of both OSX, utilities and apps, at this most stressful time.

It does not matter how pretty your interface is, if your app can do this much damage.

Terrible, terrible fail. I do not trust Drive Genius.

I've been using Drive Genius for years and it has always worked for me.
Somehow this version I have a problem - everytime I click the defrag button, it quits ! The repairs and other functions seems to work. Mac Pro, OSX 10.4.11.

Drive Genius ReviewVery diligent technical support - Version: 2.1.1, 8/4/2009 03:02PM PST

After developing a problem defragmenting a partition on an internal hard drive in my Mac G-5 the technical support folks at Prosoft went beyond my expectations. After the simple fixes failed to solve the problem they offered to examine the entire disk image of the drive to see if they could find the problem.

Finally a small library file was found to be corrupted and was stopping the defragmentation process. Prosoft provided simple instructions for deleting and reconstructing the library file and the drive defragmented completely on the first try.

Hats off to the support team for going above and beyond.

Drive Genius CommentaryIt's a bit flaky these days!! - Version: 2.1.1, 6/20/2009 01:43AM PST

I don't know what's happened, but DG used to be super reliable. Nowadays, on my PMacG5 dual 1.8Ghz 3GB machine, it takes several launch attempts before it survives. Then, when it resizes, it doesn't properly resize the filesystem. All a bit troubling. Anybody else having this bother?

Drive Genius ReviewAn excelellent time-saver, with outstanding support - Version: 2.1.1, 5/8/2009 08:44AM PST

I've found the tech support for Drive Genius to be consistently outstanding.

My favorite aspect of the software is that it makes it relatively easy to nondestructively repartition Mac drives, and saves a lot of time versus reformatting entire drives.

Drive Genius ReviewDRIVE GENIUS 2.1.1 MAKES MAINTENANCE SOOOOOO SLICK! - Version: 2.1.1, 4/30/2009 06:49PM PST

Doing 96K ProTools LE 8.1 pushes my Mac to it's limits. I need all the maintenance done and frequently or I'll be sorry. This Quartz Extreme presentation; pure cosmetics and why shouldn't there be visual art in a computer maintenance program this super effective? Look for a deal. You can find it half price easy! Somebody is really thinking.

Drive Genius Troubleshooting ReportAnimated User Interface bug in v2.1.1 using Tiger 10.4.11 - Version: 2.1.1, 4/16/2009 11:14AM PST

Uh oh! I installed v2.1.1 and got a bug:

The Animated User Interface is locked up. All I get is a smashed up amalgamation of all the feature icons, and nothing happens if you click on the mess. You have to use the menu or turn off the Animated User Interface in the Preferences to access each feature. Trashing the Preferences file and re-activating my serial number did NOT help.

I have sent a support note to ProSoft about the bug.

Suggestion: Go back to version 2.1.0 until this is repaired.
