Very simple, very fast, very good

I use both this and Quicksilver. Quicksilver is obviously a lot richer in options, but also takes longer to learn to use, and can be slower and less effecient when simply wanting to open an app it hasn't 'learned' abbreviations for yet.
It's a taste thing. I rely on Quicksilver more and more, but my wife, who values clean simplicity more than bells and whistles has happily stuck with ABC Launch as her default launch app. (The fact is, either is wonderful as a free app).
Please note, some earlier reviews complain about the lack of hot key felxibility, but that's fixed in the current version (mine is simply linked to F4).

Wonderfully useful!

I can recommend that anyone looking for a simple "quick-launch" solution try this. It works very well and doesn't require any app specific configurations. I love it :)
Impressive for freeware

Lightweight and works like a charm. You have to manually rehash the list if you add programs or documents, but that's an easy click to do. I do wish the hotkey was a little more flexible (I'd rather do CMD-OPT-F1 for single-hand operation...CMD-F1 is already used by another app). My only other request is to be able to assign separate hotkeys: one for apps and one for documents. Bottom line is that it works, it's smooth, and it's FREE!

After my previous post, I felt that I ought to come back and report that the next version of ABCLaunch started up correctly; apparently there was a probelm with certain systems and mine (a G5) must have fallen into that group.
So, what about the new, working version? Well, I quite like it. It does exactly what it claims, which is always a goood start for a one-trick pony like this (and that's not a cheap shot -- I'm someone who really likes apps that do ONE THING ONLY because it normally means that they do them well). I was a bit hesitant at first because when I typed in a search command ("shell", to see how quickly it would list the various flavours of iShell on my drive) it churned and whirred for something like 20-30 sseconds before showing any results. This was with two searchable paths specified in preferences: my apps folder and my documents folder. However, this may have simply been ABCLaunch building its indices because subsequent searches (for folders and docs within my documents folder) were instant, as they should be.
My only real gripe at the moment is that the choice of hotkey is limited to the Cmd+F-key combos, with only F1-12 supported. I alway assign launchers like this to the Escape key (usually Ctrl-Esc) as it's a very easy combo to type with my right hand on the mouse. Besides, as someone who uses a lot of design apps like Photoshop and InDesign I tend to find that my F-Keys are all taken up with actions and things like Expose. So that's the stumbling block for me right now.
If that were changed I'd possibly switch over from Namely (which, incidentally, I find to be a much less obtrusive window than ABC) for the ability to launch files as well as Apps. It's an indicator of how that hotkey affects my work style that I actually have both Namely and ABCLauncher running simultaneously right now, and I always go to Namely because of the more convenient hotkey (and because I prefer the neatness of its window). Still, ABC does it's job and does it well.

I downloaded this app, but it appeared not to work. According to the documentation: "1. Run ABCLaunch and you can see a menu "ABC" in the menu bar." Well, I launched the app, but no such item appeared in the menu bar and using the default keyboard shortcut to call ABC Launcher did not activate anything either (the only sign that anything happened at all was that the app icon did that expand-and-fade thing that app icons do when they launch). This may just be something to do with my system (no other reviews to compare to yet) but it's a non-started for me. I'd thought maybe it would be a replacement for the excellent app launcher 'Namely', with file launching as well (but without all the whistles and bells that 'Launchbar' has), but for now I'll stick with Namely and see how this develops. Nice idea, just didn't work for me.
