Product Description:

At some time/place you'd better start/restart your Mac without a chime. Just copy Psst! to your HD and launch it once - no more installation needed at all. Psst! is a faceless application that does not appear anywhere. At next start no chime will disturb anybody anymore. To get the chime back again, just remove Psst! from the user's login items. And launch Psst! again anytime to get back to silence.

Note: Psst! does not work on every Mac!

What Psst! actually does is muting your Mac before shutting down and de-muting it again after login. If this does not work on your Mac - Psst! will not work either.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.3 or higher

…on MacBook Air & gives finer control than Startup Sound PrefPane (which I still use & like on G4 OS X.5.2) - just quit the user interface after setting the sound level, and the daemon is using only about 5.7 MB real memory (907 MB swap space)…

Psst! ReviewStill Works Great, only it hogs RAM - Version: 2.1.1, 2/19/2008 12:00AM PST

I love this program (see my past review Apr '07). My only problem with Psst is that it's a RAM hog. Why should a simple program that only needs to do one function, and one function only (set volume to a preset value prior to restart) use 13.4 Mb of real RAM? This may not seem like much, but let me put this value into perspective:

Activity Monitor has shown me that Apple Mail comes in at 9.41 Mb of real RAM, and Finder at 10.9. The shared memory for these two apps are greater than Psst, which makes sense. But Psst shouldn't have a greater real RAM demand than these two programs, for sure.

Therefore, I call this program a HOG! and I'd like to see the developer trim the fat on this great app.

One other small nuisance: The Psst daemon for some reason occasionally loses it's identity in the Login Items, and I must then select it again for Psst to work. This along with the RAM problem makes me downgrade this version to 2 stars for Quality/Stability.

ciao
