Product Description:

Welcome to OmniOutliner 3, an amazingly flexible program for creating, collecting, and organizing information. Give your creativity a kick start by using an application that's actually designed to help you think. It's like having an extra brain - one that doesn't keep losing the car keys. You can use OmniOutliner's document structure to create hierarchies of main headings and subpoints that can be expanded and collapsed, which are immensely useful when it comes to brainstorming new ideas, drilling out specifics, and lining up steps needed to get everything done. But you aren't limited to outlines - you've got multiple columns, smart checkboxes, customizable popup lists, and an über-innovative styles system at your disposal. Use OmniOutliner to draft to-do lists, create agendas, manage tasks, track expenses, take notes, plan events, write screenplays...and just about anything else you can think of. It's a smarter way to write, a more productive way to stay organized. Whatever your project, OmniOutliner has the tools you need to get the job done.

We've updated OmniOutliner with version 3 to deliver the features most requested by our current customers: support for inline images, links to external URLs, more flexible options for searching and navigating, and rich formatting options for presentation on screen and in print.

However, we didn't stop there - some features are just more relevant to the power user, and that's why we've created a "Pro" version of OmniOutliner with even more options.

What's new in this version:

No changes since 3.6.2 beta 2
  • Fixed a crash when dragging an attachment out of a editing text field and dropping it as a new row.
  • Avoid a crash in Apple's typesetting support by removing the full justification style in the Book Draft template.
  • Fixed title of application-included templates when OmniOutliner Pro is installed in the user's personal Applications directory.
  • Fixed a problem where duplicating a named style could end in a state where you could drag one named style to assign it, but not the other.
  • Named style function key bindings now only go up to 8 since F9 is a system key binding.
  • Removing keyboard shortcuts for the column and document inspectors in French. These were mapping to shift-cmd-3 and shift-cmd-4, which are the system screen shot commands. You may assign keyboard shortcuts for these in System Preferences, if you like.
  • In the German localization for the backup vs. last saved alert panel, updated the button labels to be more distinct.
  • In Standard, you can now enable/disable headers and footers in the print sheet, regardless of whether they are enabled by default via the page setup sheet.
  • Fixed regression in beta 1 where bringing up the page setup sheet could mark the document dirty.
  • Fixed failure to load files with corrupted named style references. Now, if a named style isn't found with a given unique identifier, we'll fall back to looking up by name. If that fails, we'll just drop the reference instead of failing to load the file at all.
  • Fixed crash when clearing the undo stack after having dragged in a URL and then undone that change.
  • Exporting to flat file formats (CSV, plain HTML, etc.) will no longer raise an error when the document has metadata set in the document Spotlight inspector.
  • The row expand/collapse animation will no longer be slow if you are holding down shift unless the animation is due to a mouse click. French keyboard users (where numbers require shift) will no longer see the slow animation when using the keyboard shortcuts to expand and collapse rows.
  • Tabbed inspector icons should be colored appropriate for the selection before the first time the inspector is loaded.
  • Styles applied to the document title tag as well as styles applied in the document header view should now be reflected in the printed output. In the case of a conflict, the style attribute set up in the document title view will win.
  • The spell checking panel 'Correct' button will now replace the first misspelled word when it is in a different row.
  • Inherited styles are now listed at the bottom of each section in the style attributes inspector. This this follows the most specific to least specific layout in the rest of the inspector.
  • Clicking on an attachment, pausing, and then dragging will now drag the attachment as a file reference instead of as a text clipping.

Previous version (6.2) opened and used OK. This new version, downloaded, as advertised in VersionTracker, proclaims that I cannot open it "on this architecture" - whatever that means.

I use it on a Mac, now OS 10.5.6.

So?

OmniOutliner Pro CommentaryStill no servable version or locking of open docs - Version: 3.6.5, 5/4/2008 06:35PM PST

I'm a licensed user with 8 licenses for OO Pro which I use in my estate planning law office for a variety of tasks, all of which involve project management, process control and checklists to make certain that we don't forget to do anything.

I am astounded that after all the years of development, and several requests to make OO docs servable or at least lock themselves to other users when they are opened, that I can open a document on one machine, have another user open the same doc on their machine, make changes to the document on my machine and save them, have the other user make changes to the document on their machine and save them which will overwrite the changes I've made and saved. But for the fact that all the users in my office know about this glaring defect in an otherwise great product, this oversight could create a disaster for us if some checklist item got deleted by a second user opening and modifiying a document that another user had opened first.

OO is a great organizer, but only for one person at a time. And I think it's time I looked for a project management package that is servable.

I sure do wish there was an update. The app is great at what it does, but there's still a lot missing. It could be the king of outliners/notetaking apps with some more development.
