Previous version (6.2) opened and used OK. This new version, downloaded, as advertised in VersionTracker, proclaims that I cannot open it "on this architecture" - whatever that means.

I use it on a Mac, now OS 10.5.6.

So?

OmniOutliner Pro CommentaryStill no servable version or locking of open docs - Version: 3.6.5, 5/4/2008 06:35PM PST

I'm a licensed user with 8 licenses for OO Pro which I use in my estate planning law office for a variety of tasks, all of which involve project management, process control and checklists to make certain that we don't forget to do anything.

I am astounded that after all the years of development, and several requests to make OO docs servable or at least lock themselves to other users when they are opened, that I can open a document on one machine, have another user open the same doc on their machine, make changes to the document on my machine and save them, have the other user make changes to the document on their machine and save them which will overwrite the changes I've made and saved. But for the fact that all the users in my office know about this glaring defect in an otherwise great product, this oversight could create a disaster for us if some checklist item got deleted by a second user opening and modifiying a document that another user had opened first.

OO is a great organizer, but only for one person at a time. And I think it's time I looked for a project management package that is servable.

I sure do wish there was an update. The app is great at what it does, but there's still a lot missing. It could be the king of outliners/notetaking apps with some more development.

As a professional editor who spends a lot of time each day in the KJV Bible and Book of Mormon, I have to say that I love a company that would use the phrase “from whence” in its Release Notes. I’m no longer the only one to do so. The bug that caused crashes with Hebrew has also been partially fixed to the extent allowable by the currently flawed Mac OS, so that is a fortunate development.

prolaw1
3.6.1 (v143.15)
Current as of 78866
General
- The 'New from Template' menu item is now present in
OmniOutliner Standard. Under both Pro and Standard, the menu
layout has been structured to show from whence each template
originates.
- Added built-in templates for some common document types.
- OmniOutliner no longer claims to read .plist files, though it
still does. If you command-option drag a .plist file onto
OmniOutliner, it will open it. But, Launch Services was too
eager to open plist files in OmniOutliner and it was annoying
people.
Localizations
- Added Traditional Chinese localization.
- Added a missing file to the Japanese help. Updated Welcome
document localization for Japanese.
Stability
- Fixed another case of crashing when dragging in a new Address
Book entry that had not yet been saved in Address Book.
- Fixed a crash on launch under 10.3.9. Thanks to Steve D. for
verifying the fix for us (since we could never reproduce it
here).
- Worked around a bug in the copy/paste code in Open Office.
They claim to have a string on the pasteboard in some cases,
but have actually failed to write anything to the pasteboard.
We weren't handling this bad case, and were crashing.
- Fixed crash in Keynote export when outline column is set to
the Number type and has an empty cell.
- Fixed intermittent crash on 10.3.9 when zero network
connections are enabled.
- Fixed a crash in some situations when doing a copy, paste,
undo and then re-paste.
- Fixed error when using the built-in popup dictionary
(control-command-d) in certain cases.
- Fixed crash when using option-arrow to move a word at a time
in right-to-left writing systems (Hebrew & Arabic, for
example). There are still bugs in Mac OS X that prevent this
from working perfectly, but now there is no crash.
- Fixed a rare error when typing and navigating between cells
in a non-text column (number, date, etc.)
- Fixed error message after undoing a page setup change in
multi-column documents.
- Fixed error message and possible crash when typing an
unparsable number ("x", for example), date or duration into a
cell, hitting return to create a new row, undo and then
trying to fix the cell.
Performance
- Fixed slowness in clicking on some attachments in notes when
viewing notes in a pane.
Interface
- You can now change the compression setting on a document when
the Advanced tab of the Document inspector is visible at
application launch time.
- The compression checkbox on the Advanced tab of the Document
inspector no longer gets stuck in OmniOutliner Standard if
you close all documents.
- Fixed a regression in the style inspector that prevented
changing the font size via the text field and caused an error
alert in some cases.
- Correctly restore the drawer visibility in the case that
notes are shown in a pane.
- The "Open With" context menu on attachments now deals with
applications that are missing the CFBundleName entry. These
applications should now show up in the context menu.
- When changing the summary type of a column to None, the
values in parent rows will now be cleared in the view.
Previously they were left cleared internally, but were still
presented in the display as the old summarized value.
- Changing the summary type on a column with a sort ordering
specified no longer results in two separate undo operations.
- Using the option-left/right arrow key to move a word at a
time will now correctly move between cells in the document,
though only in left-to-right scripts. Bugs in Mac OS X
prevent this from working in Hebrew or Arabic.
AppleScript
- Changing the 'selected' property of a row will now work as
expected.

OmniOutliner Pro ReviewSTILL no Cloning - UGH - Version: 3.6, 6/15/2006 04:14PM PST

We have a bunch of Macs still using Classic to run large More outlines. We were promised that v3.6 would add the old More ability to clone lines - unfortunately, no dice!

Now we're starting to move to MacIntel machines and won't be able to run Classic.

Looks like we'll have to go with TAO (a worthy competitor, but not as user-friendly/easy to use as OmniOutliner).

Unfortunately, Omni has not responded with an update of when cloning will be available either.

OmniOutliner Pro ReviewVery good but I broke it - Version: 3.5, 2/5/2006 09:38AM PST

Based on reviews on Version Tracker and others I purchased OO. The application is very good but if you want to attach a lot of pdf's etc. be very careful. After attaching my pdf's that I have scanned the program would crash repeatedly. I received a e-mail from Omni "If you have a large number of PDF files to include in an Outliner file, we'd recommend linking them in instead of directly attaching them. If you control-drag the files in, OmniOutliner will reference the existing file on your disk instead of copying it into the document." I purchased this program for the purpose of organizing my pdf's by attaching them to the database. Recommended if you want to link files instead of attaching them.

OmniOutliner Pro ReviewVery good, room for improvement - Version: 3.5, 12/29/2005 09:16AM PST

I'm comparing this app to Mori (formerly Hog Bay Notebook) so I have similar comments in a review there. Overall, I think OO is a great app as well. The UI is top-notch, you have inline notes (i.e. notes directly below the entry, a great feature missing from Mori), text that wraps in the main entry area (Mori can't do this), and export to Word. Obviously use of styles is where OO shines. As I'm more interested in data organization, I didn't appreciate this until I tried the app -- it can be very useful even if you're not exporting.

However, OO is still missing clones and links; if they don't show up in the next major update, you've got to wonder about their priorities as a "power outliner"

OO is lacking in flexibility for organizing and navigating your outline, something you may not realize until you try Mori (or some features in TAO, for example). A simple feature missing from OO (as far as I can tell) is sorting by date modified, important for me to have access to entries I am working on. In Mori, with clones, you can also drag files to the left pane for easy access, and you can use smart folders. In OO, you can tag something manually with columns and then sort, but that is not as convenient as some of Mori's options. You can also drag files to the sections pane for easier access, but without clones, you've got to remove them from your outline structure. For large and complex outlines, it's just not as easy as it should be to work in OO.

OmniOutliner Pro CommentaryQuite a learning curve - Version: 3.5, 12/19/2005 01:19PM PST

I've met more people over the past few months that have said some version of, "Oh yeah, OOPro. I tried that, but I couldn't get it..." Now that I'm trying to get it, too, I see what they mean. While this could turn out to be a must-have program for me, it's currently about the most frustrating interface I've dealt with in a few years. It simply does not behave the way you'd think it would (if you've played on Macs for years). Furthermore, OmniGroup.com make the learning curve that much harder through two ways:

1. Wait until you see the manual. Who wrote this thing? I'll tell you: it's someone so well-versed in OOPro that they could not put themselves into the minds of a beginner. Even the manual's layout (forget the content) is just bizarre. Folks: look at any how-to tech book (such as David Pogue's). First thing you'll see is screenshots of the program, followed by explanatory text. Get someone who doesn't know the program to write the manual!

2. OmniGroup's forum is something out of the early 90s. It makes it hard to post, harder to find former posts, and ultimately drives new users away. I've heard that the OmniGroup will answer any query extremely fast, and that is commendable. But the whole power behind a forum is making it super easy and fun and desirable for fellow users to respond to new users.Get a new forum!

I hope this is taken as constructive criticism. I think OOP has got to be the best to-do manager out there. I ain't giving up. This is going to be my GTD method for 2006, and with the GTD add-on, it could make millions for its inventors.

But *easy* is not the word to describe it. At least in the current way the manual is written. I haven't been this frustrated since first learning InDesign! This is one of those programs that is so good that it has such a massive following that no one is paying atttention to the throngs that try it, and simply can't get their mind around how it works. And worse, those throngs are probably looked at as dumb dodos not smart enough to get it.
