Product Description:

Merlin 2 is the next generation of project management software for Mac OS X. Following the tremendous success of Merlin 1, ProjectWizards has raised the bar to new heights with its newly released version.

Apart from the necessary and contained functions for project management, Merlin offers in addition important features which are needed during projects. Thus Merlin contains a complete risk management, a file management with version control and also an issue tracking. Even a specialized CRM is firmly integrated in Merlin. Projects can be synchronized with iCal. A specialized reporting system allows the project manager to create and modify significant reports with just a few mouse clicks. As the project progresses, Merlin evaluates the actual values, calculates the further project progress and provides a clear prognosis.

What's new in this version:

Changes

  • Merlin now reads the resource leveling values from mpp and mpx files.
  • The Edit menu (and the context menu for the activities) now includes the menu item "Delete all Assignments."
  • It is now possible to search for flag status in the Elements section.
  • The demo mode can now be identified more prominently.
  • AppleScript commands have been extended to include standard commands.

Resolved Issues

  • The Gantt chart didn't show the correct ruler grid for some levels.
  • The buffers of dependencies were not copied correctly.
  • When importing text files, the date values were not read correctly.
  • The column lists in the Show View Options of the Resource and Element view were not sorted.
  • In certain cases when double clicking in an empty section of the Gantt chart there was some unexpected behavior.
  • When using certain time formats it was not possible to enter times correctly.
  • Under certain circumstances it was possible to create resources without names.
  • Under certain circumstances after opening a document the dialogue "Show View Options" for the Elements was empty.
  • When exporting an ics file, the project itself was exported as an event.
  • When syncing with iCal, the priorities were not transferred.
  • When expanding combined projects, the Elements list did not always update.
  • Copying File Elements did not always function properly.
  • Files could be dragged to combined projects which were not yet loaded.
  • In certain cases the window displaying the progress was still visible after the import of a File Element.
  • The styles for milestones were not always updated.
  • When switching from another application to Merlin caused Merlin to end unexpectedly in certain cases.
  • After a printout, changes were not always transferred to the preview window.
  • In combined projects the start and end times of group activities were not always calculated correctly.
  • In certain combined projects it was not always possible to create Elements.
  • The title of linked projects could not be edited.
  • When the outline was sorted according to the WBS column, the sorting was not actualized when the activities were re-ordered.
  • The assignment bars in the Gantt chart could not be moved when actual values were entered for the activity.
  • In the print dialogue it was possible to enter margins that were larger than the page.
  • Elements attached to resources were not viewable when the project was selected.
  • When switching the administration area of the actual values from activity to assignments, sometimes the actual start/end dates were lost.
  • It was possible to edit the name of the resource from the Mac OS X address book in the auxiliary area.
  • When the Library was called up, Merlin unexpectedly quit in certain cases.
  • Resource calendars in MS Project XML Export could not be read by MS Project 2007.
  • In certain cases a project file could not be saved.

  • Under certain circumstances, the planned, expected and actual costs of a project were not calculated.
  • When the resource list was not sorted, creating a new report caused unexpected results.
  • When removing an Element, the main view lost its selection.
  • Costs per assignment were not added to the expected work costs.

Merlin ReviewWhat a great product. MS Project doesn't not come close to this - Version: 2.6 beta, 5/10/2008 07:49PM PST

I was initially under the impression I wouldn't find anything decent for my Macbook and almost resigned myself to having to work in a VM for project management until someone suggested I use Merlin. What an awesome product. Extremely well made, versatile, feature rich, and easy to use. The dragging of MPP's into Merlin works perfectly and some of the export options are great.

I'll continue using the Beta for the next month and if all continues to go as well as this I'll be putting in my order. I'd like to see it a little cheaper, but then again, for the functionality you get, its still a bargain, maybe I'll just have to wait for the promo deal on it.

I am working now for over one year with Merlin and in this time it has been developed to the major tool for projects!

It includes (almost) all needed functions for a project manager's work and present it in a very usable and pretty interface. Each single function makes clear to me, they have thought about it - not from a developers perspective - but with their project managers eyes. And I think this is one of the (or maby the biggest) factor of success: These guys are project managers!

Of course it is not bug free - I don't know any application which is bug free - but the responsiveness of the support team, and the performance of the developers are beating any other application in that field.

Long time ago Merlin was treated as an insider tip. Now I have to say: Merlin is the standard on Mac OS X.

Standard disclaimer: I am not beeing paid for writing this!

Merlin ReviewAwful Demo - Version: 2.0.3, 2/6/2007 05:03AM PST

The demo is for 40 activities. That means a list of 40 activities in the activities window not activations as I read it. This means that after 40 you can't save. Unfortunately the reminder of this is ambiguous. I wish it had read "You have created 40 activities and are no longer able to save. Please buy a license etc etc etc". It would spare the ‘gung ho’ like me spending all morning creating a demo template of over 100 activities and not reading the alert properly. I lost the mornings work. Yes I know, I know. I should read it very carefully and all that but on hitting APPLE S I though I WAS saving and that the pop up was just a reminder.
